Culture at Minneapolis investment firms?
Currently an Analyst in Minneapolis (ignore title) and looking to stay in the area after my Analyst stint. Could anyone speak to the cultures at some of the firms in the area? I’ve been impressed by the amount of talent in Minneapolis, and there is a lot of good info on many shops, but as an outsider I can’t get a good sense of which firms offer the best experience from a culture/WLB perspective. Mostly interested in hearing about the firms with particularly good cultures and the places to absolutely 100% avoid. Curious to know how much the Midwest culture translates to different spots.
Listing a few names I found from WSO and LinkedIn:
CarVal, Castlelake, Varde, Whitebox, Garda, Pine River, Shoreview, NEP, NMP, Proterra, Yukon, Pru, Arthur Ventures, Walleye, OSP, Estuary, Deepwater, Piper Merchant Banking, every other Cargill-spinoff-spinoff, etc
Before anyone says “none of those shops are similar - you’re naming hedge funds next to VCs” - I’m listing a wide variety of shops to hopefully get some comments going. I know of a several other people who’d also be interested in this info who may want something a bit different than traditional PE.
thanks all.
Avoid Castlelake due to poor performance over past couple years and recent turnover at senior level.. decent place to stick around though if you just want to collect a good paycheck and hang in there since you wre local to MSP
Good intel. Any info on any of the larger PE firms with >$1bn in AUM? I guess that really is just Norwest, Shoreview, Proterra, the Varde PE vehicles…? I guess the Carlson and Pohlad family PE investment teams have greater than $1bn of permanent family capital, but not a ton of pure play PE at that scale.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the culture at investment firms in Minneapolis can vary widely, just like in any other city. Some firms may have a more laid-back, Midwestern vibe, while others may be more intense and competitive.
From the context provided, it seems that there are a variety of firms in the area, including private equity shops like Norwest and Stone Arch Capital, as well as the private investment arms of larger corporations like Allianz Global Investors, Prudential Capital Group, and Ameriprise Asset Management.
However, the context doesn't provide specific information about the culture at these firms or the ones you've listed. It might be helpful to reach out to people who work at these firms or have worked there in the past to get a better sense of the culture.
Remember, a firm's culture can greatly impact your work experience, so it's important to find a place where you feel you would fit in and thrive. Good luck with your search!
