Permira vs Ardian vs PAI vs 3i vs Cinven vs Advent vs General Atlantic

Hi,
everyone I have interviews at all of the above mentioned firms for an internship. In total I will be able to do 2 maybe 3 internships and wanted to ask, if you have the choice which firm would you take?

I guess for me GA would be one choice since the focus is different than for other firms (growth equity is different than the other funds)

Permira, Ardian, PAI, Cinven and Advent are all rather similiar although Permira, Cinven and Advent are aguable a cut above the rest.

For me 3i is a black box, has anyone any information on them?

Have been at Ardian, would see them similar to PAI and Triton, Cinven certainly higher, Permira in FFM is okay. Ardian Buyout team is pretty nice + there is a small chance for FT role and FT pay is pretty much on par with IB on analyst level. GA also has a nice team but tasks weren’t too interesting from what I‘ve heard + basically no chance for FT

Ardian has never been in the same league as the other firms you mentioned, while Permira took some big hits in their latest fund.

Don't get me wrong, both firms are still great places to do an internship, so there is no 'issue' per se - I just don't rank them as highly as the other names.

Permira, Advent top // Cinven, PAI middle // 3i, Adrian bottom

You won’t get all six anyway so this is a pretty dumb thread

German here. Out of all the funds you mentioned I would prioritize like this:

Priority No.1 Advent International - (raised 25bn recently and they tend to hire interns full time analysts in Frankfurt)

Priority No.2 Cinven (They hire interns as analysts too)

Priority No.3 Permira (very interesting deals in the past)

Priority No.4 General Atlantic (GE investing might be very challenging given the current times, but I think that will make the job much more interesting for an intern)

The other shops are mid-market and Germany is the best place for mid-market deals. I would prefer PAI due to the fact that they are seen as more exclusive than Ardian.

Agree with this.

Advent is top for brand and AUM and recent performance, plus they're doing really cool shit over there.

Cinven and Permira are second tier afterwards, I think Permira's brand is better than Cinven's but recent performance and fundraising is shoddy.

Adrian last.

What’s the issue with Permira’s fundraises? They just closed a €16B fund, up from €11B in the one prior, and their Fund V and VI (excluding VII because it closed in 2020, a bit early to judge returns) are both marked at a 24% net IRR by Calpers, so that would seem pretty good, but curious about more detailed nuance

In Europe, Germany especially most funds do not advertise their positions for interns. I literally called 50 PE companies and 35 or so had internships position if you called them.

Some who did not offer internships were CVC, Apollo, EQT, Blackstone but I had no hopes of getting an invite anyway.

For UK I also was successful however only about 2-3 out of 5 offices I called offered internships
