10 Lies You Should Tell in a Job Interview
Doostang listed earlier this month some great white "lies" that may help candidates in an interview- No wonder they've gathered 111 "Likes" on Facebook so far.-
Anybody "practiced" them so far ?
1. Every job you ever had was great.
2. Every project you’ve ever worked on was successful.
Whow, that's hard to shallow (for me that is)...
3. You’ve done this type of work before.
Possible...and easier to tell. Just got a lot of explaining to do.
4. Your last boss was brilliant.
Yeah, right...or Why not ?
5. You’re currently working.
Sure you are..that's why you're looking for a job, right ?
6. You love to work late.
Doesn't everybody ?
7. Every co-worker was great.
Never met anyone you didn't like. You remembered everybody's birthdays, too.
8. You learned a lot in college.
9. You almost never get sick.
Superman is your half brother.
Didn't get a job because I mentionned my boss was not competent (the head hunter fed that back to me as a feedback) So bloody true, live my that rule, which also sums up in: Everyone you worked with is great
1, 4, 7 - the worst thing you can do is complain about your past jobs and coworkers. The worst. Especially for junior hires. No one wants to hear your complaints or to hear you speak badly about people who they don't know, or hear a 23 year old complain about how ineffective their 40 year old superiors were. Keep the tone of interviews positive.
You should (and I have) tried to make my prior jobs sound great - if that leads to them asking "well why are you leaving then" that's great. You should have a well practiced, well thought out reason why your current job is no longer what you are looking for and the job they are offering is.
2 - I would actually recommend bringing up difficulties you encountered in your past deals/projects. Not "I overslept and blew up a deal", but show you can handle adversity.
6, 9, 10 - let's hope you don't mention anything to the contrary. I had a good story during my interviews about having to head to the office during a severe blizzard when the city was shut down - I let them know that it was less than fun, but you do what needs to be done.
