10 People to Befriend on Wall Street

A successful Wall Street career requires people skills. In the first place, you need to know who to avoid. Unfortunately, however, it’s not enough to avoid people. There are some people you absolutely have to make your allies.

CNBC: Ten People You Should Befriend on Wall Street

LOL at this, any comments or additional people in mind to befriend?

The IT guys are a definite, in all my corporate just I make it necessary to make friends there and its always worked out well for me.......

You give me a gift? *BAM* Thank you note! You invite me somewhere? *POW* RSVP! You do me a favor? *WHAM* Favor returned! Do not test my politeness.

About the DP and backoffice guys: remember that you have to go in there and not make enemies deliberately, but make it very clear to them that they should not dare to fuck with you either. Generally BO hates the FO staff and that hate is delocalized across the entire FO team, whether you deserve it or not.

I never got any shit from the IT guys but DP can be dangerous account of their resentments.

This is for you young guys about to enter the jungle.

Oh, I second the IT guys, Junior Analysts, EAs and Compliance. I cannot expound upon the absolute necessity of having Compliance on your side. If there is someone to befriend after the IT Guys, it's the people in Compliance. If you are looking down on them, they will make your life a living hell. After compliance is the Junior Analysts and then the EAs. Compliance is an absolute must. I can't stress that enough.

Having Compliance on your side makes all the difference in getting things done. I don't care who you are, but if you think your shit is more important than everyone elses, take a number. Everyone thinks their shit is the most important thing that needs to be handled. When it comes to compliance, they always hear the "urgent" line and are aware of all the bullshit that bankers, traders and AM guys do to get their needs to the front of the line. They don't care what the reason is, but if you get on their good side, you will get alot more done than you could expect.

I'd talk to 2 of the 4 compliance officers on my floor daily and when I needed something, they'd bump me up to the top of the list pretty quickly if I needed something done becuase I maintained a friendship with them. It became a saving grace because I could leverage that relationship to put me ahead of others in line to get things done. It makes all the difference when time is of the essense.

Yeah I actually spark random conversations with the IT guys, Just because its not FO it doesn't make it any less important, i mean they do what they do because they like it as do we. Talk about sports and crap, show them your cool. I get new blackberries, and huge monitors lol.

Taking time to befriend the people around you but not immediately noticeable in your daily life always pays off. It's like being in college, everyone else is too busy douching around in line to pay attention but if you talk to the guy making your pancakes in the cafeteria every week, you're the only one getting free food regularly.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

That is definitely true!

As a former barista, I can tell you befriending one of us could save you a couple hundred dollars in coffee every year. Not that you BSDs making $100k+ care ;)

By the way, best drink at Starbucks = Triple Grande, Upside Down, Nonfat Caramel Macchiato. It's heaven in your mouth. /geh

Remember people, think Fight Club. If you fuck with the service people they will fuck you over. And in this case, MO/BO can be considered service.

DM, so true. I can't help think of my buddy, Mitch, the Barista from Starbucks. I've known Mitch for a very long time, and I've also known that he's worked in Food Service. After leaving the job prior to being a Barista and Manager at Starbucks, he went to Starbucks. Lets just say I have stories from him that would make you fear your Barista. Lets just say some of the stories I've heard from him are fucked up.

There's "The Snitch", "3rd Time's a Charm", "Never Fuck With Your Barista", "The Foam Story", "Police Vengance" - oddly enough, it wasn't him getting revenge on a cop but that he took part in a police prank - and a few others that come to mind.

Honestly, don't fuck with your waitstaff in general. Especially if you end up becoming a regular at a place, then your life becomes much worse than it should be.

AHAHAHA I have a police story, as well. We had these mini-cupcakes that were brand new and this Lieutenant that always came in asked if we would help him fk with one of his underlings (also happened to be a friend from the academy and they always came in together, both decent, nice guys and they never paid for a drink or food, no matter how expensive).

You know that challenge, eating a spoonful of cinnamon with no water or anything to wash it down? Let's just say he popped in small cupcake with ~2 spoonfuls of cinnamon. 3 seconds later he was blowing cinnamon all over our store. His buddy couldnt stop laughing, trying to ask me for water. I gave him the cup I had the foresight to fill up. He was laughing so hard he couldnt even hand it to his friend, ended up just grabbing him and throwing the water in the general direction of his face. The guy was just covered in sticky cinnamon. Luckily, his boss was there and let him go home and clean up :-p
