1st Year Analyst - Houston
Hi all,
I am going to be a 1st year analyst in Houston in the coming year. Really trying to get a grasp of life there. Regarding this, I have a couple of questions:
Where are the best places to live in Houston as a young professional?
Do you have a car or do you use public transportation?
What’s the deal with these underground tunnels?
What’s the weather like throughout the year? (Yes I know it’s hot)
Best places to go out? Bars, events, etc.?
Any other general information that is a must know would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
I would recommend Montrose, Upper Kirby, or the Heights. Downtown if you want to walk to work but much more expensive and there's always construction, people, and noise.
Absolutely need a car to get around, no question.
They connect all of downtown underground. It's really nice to use to walk from one part of downtown to another -- there are lunch spots, tailors, dentist offices, etc
Hot, hot, hot. Winter is chillier and rainy then hot the rest of the year. Didn't have allergies until I moved here (coming from VA).
During non-COVID, love Kirby Ice House, Heights Bier Garden, El Tiempo/Ninfa's. Amazing food scene -- BCN and MAD, all of Chris Shepherd's restaurants. Rodeo is huge, as are Astros/Rockets/Texans games. Definitely try to get involved in rodeo even as an analyst, many people in banking support it in some way. There are plenty of young professional organizations to join and Young Professionals in Energy/Young Professionals in Finance do great breakfast and quick lunch meetings.
Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

Thank you so much. That helps a lot. I will definitely look into those areas to live!
I currently live in the Heights area, highly recommend for graduating/young professionals. A lot to do and a lot of younger folks
Market Square Tower - James Harden lives in the penthouse penthouse and hoops with young bankers at the bball court
alternatively - avoid energy at all costs and completely pivot to literally anything else. Life is too short to burn as much money as this industry burns
