Wow. 1.5 years total experience? How big is the bank you work for?
Curious as well. That is extremely good comp for ~40 hours/week less than 2 years out of undergrad.
I work for a large (national level) consumer/commercial/retail bank. I started out of college in a very small/specialized (non-IB) BB analyst program, and then left at 13mo to join a later stage startup looking to hire sometime from my team with my skillset/experience (analytics &product strategy focused). I received a big title and comp boost when I did so (95k target to 150k target). My startup was then very shortly after acquired by my current firm, and that is how I ended up at ~165k for 2022.
My role is essentially to be the business analyst (albeit I am leveled as a manager) for a core BU function. This is not a role that is readily available and I absolutely lucked into my situation. If I was to leave my current role and look elsewhere, I would struggle to find something paying over ~125k all-in without switching over to consulting or banking (had both as options out of undergrad, albeit not at a MBB/BB).
Plan for now is to spend ~2 years at my current firm and then switch to MBA / MBB.
Alternatively maybe I'll switch over to tech at some point, as I took a number of CS classes at school (top CS target) and I spend a decent amount of time coding in my current role

Did you start in commercial banking straight out of undergrad?
Yes
I didn't realize commercial banking worked that many hours, especially at the VP level. Is that typical?
Depends on your role, I am in sales, pre-COVID I actually traveled about 2 days a weeks, mainly east coast, as far west Texas/Chicago meeting client, product and business management don’t travel and typical are more in the 50hrs/week range
Are you a RM or in portfolio management/underwriting as a credit officer/underwriter?
Cash management, I work close with the RMs and credit teams

Tech
Job: Corporate Finance
Experience: AVP, ~6.5 years experience total experience
Industry: Bank (major BB)
Base: $120k -> $124k
Bonus: ~$5k (This was lower than expected even though I'm in a non revenue generating role)
Hours: Average ~50 - 55, but goes up to 60 - 70 if busy
City: NYC/LA/SF
Probably looking to make a move and aim for total comp nearing at least ~$180k since it's pretty clear I'm underpaid
This is ridiculous. FP&A at a BB pays this little? Or were you there for more than 5 years and market outpaced you significantly while your company didnt do shit to adjust you? Either way, look and leave ASAP. $200k would be pretty easy in this market
Well, it's a combination of both staying too long and then just being lied to regarding opportunities/promotions. I started as a consultant from another company that was basically staffed full-time with the team. Got d*cked pretty hard for salary here since I was just desperate to move at the time. Stayed in that role / team for around 3.5 years before getting converted to an official employee of the bank, but at the same level, albeit with a pay bump (but obviously still much below market).
Didn't get promoted again in recent cycle even though I've been performing at VP level for past 3 years. Was told I'd get one this year, but I've heard that bs for so long. Just updated the resume and about to begin applying elsewhere to actually get the correct comp.

Midwest, it's called an "up and coming" city by a lot of places. I think it's consistently top 20 in the best places to live rankings that some outlets make.
