Hi all,
I am a junior in the economics department at an HYPS school. I recently got very interested in consulting, but I have a very science/health care background (lots of research, one experience was very quantitative and used C (the language) and dealt with modeling the behavior of large swarms).
My resume will include things such as 3 research experiences and work experience with the general chemistry lab as a technician and as a math instructor for a test prep company.
I'd really like a consulting job over the summer, but wouldn't mind doing a banking one if that can help me land a FT consulting job next year. I really love problem solving and analyzing data (hence my science/econ background), and I especially enjoy pointing out inefficiencies (haha not sure how relevant this is), so I want to at least try consulting.
I know there aren't that many internships available though. My school's career services site only lists 8 that are taking applications through our career services (McKinsey, Bain, Cornerstone, ZS, etc.).
I'm guessing you've got a good shot at getting an interview. When you go to a top school and have a good GPA, you have plenty of room for error (having no internships as a junior, etc...). You're going to have to show dedication and that you understand the job (whether it be banking or consulting) when you have the interview though.
make sure someone with experience interning (or preferably real experience) in whatever area you're applying for (consulting/banking) helps you and goes over your resume. You're clearly a bit of a newb and have no idea what they're looking for (which is fine, you're young, and i don't mean that as an insult), so you should just make sure someone who does know gives you some advice.

It's assumed that if you got into one of those schools you are capable of anything. With a 3.8 in a business related major and demonstrated mathematical aptitude I would be VERY surprised if you didn't get the internship of your choice.
With that background you are virtually guaranteed consulting interviews. However, whether you are able to convert this to a summer offer will be 90% based on performance on the case interview.

I'm very encouraged - it seems like I need to tailor my resume to appeal to consulting firms and prepare for the case interviews (I checked out caseinterview.com - Victor Cheng seems so legit! Made me want to be a consultant even more - and I purchased "Case in Point").
make sure to network with people in the banks and consulting firms. this made all the difference. someone i know was on the fence with mbb and put on a waiting list for an internship, and then got the offer because he had developed a strong relationship with a relatively senior person at the firm who was an alum of our school.

I think in your case, your personality is probably whats going to seal the deal. Consulting firms tend to take that into consideration BIG TIME.
I personally did not have a high gpa, however, i demonstrated my interests with internships and my hunger of wanting the job with how my personality was directly related to the position posted.
Dont give up, just begin your research and preps and you'll be fine.

I was wondering, how many internships should one apply to? My career services only shows 8 (Bain, McKinsey, Deloitte, Cornerstone, Putnam, ZS, Bates White, and Dean), but I feel like it'll be hard to get even one of those (we have to go through the typical 3 rounds of interviews, with the last one being ridiculously long, right?). Should I just look up some other consulting firms and apply through their website?
