3i Group
Anyone have any thoughts on the PE team at 3i, New York? They are publicly traded and use balance sheet capital rather than funds. Haven’t worked with them but keep hearing their name.

Have come across them on a few deals as well. Respected firm in the middle-market and the team in New York is sharp. Don't know anyone there beyond a few short conversations, but generally have been impressed and they've made some savvy investments.
I believe they had some issues in the early 2010s after they raised the 5B fund and have since gone through some restructuring. Appear to have emerged from the changes in a strong position though and look to be growing pretty quickly in New York. From glancing at their website, they've been around 70 years or so, but only in NYC as of 2007.
3i was founded by the Bank of England to provide finance to British companies after WW2, which is why it was founded 70+ years ago.
Their logo looks like a Mexican restaurant
Seem very legit, but hard to find too much online and on WSO about them.
Bump?
One of the worst funds on the street. Only thing worse than the culture is their ability to generate returns.
You must've missed their investment in Action. 75% IRR to date.
@ OP; it's a well-respected shop in Europe. Can't comment on their reputation in the US of A.
I guess as an intern you haven't yet learned to look at dates. They haven't had a successful vintage since eurofund V in 2006 and Action was the only deal in that vintage that got over the hurdle rate. Without it there was 0 carry.
If OP does research he'll see the validity of my original statement holds.
Curious if others have similar thoughts on the current NYC team and recent performance? Seems like there was a decent amount of turnover from late 2000s - 2015 and average ~1-2 deals p.a. in North America.
