5th year to get an MA
Seeing as its already mid october and particularly as the area I want to get into (research), for the few people who get hired, seems to get filled completely from summer interns, I'm scambling for a backup plan.
If I cant find a decent other job this fall, and research just doesnt seem to have a ton of options, I'm considering doing a 5 year as my school has a program where you do an extra year and get a masters.
I really don't care about the MA, but it would let me get another shot at the internships that I didnt know about when I was a junior.
Does anyone have thoughts about the success of a plan like this. Can it be spun well in an interview?
I'm sure it couldn't hurt. However if thats the only reason to get the MA totally not worth it. Your paying up to 40g for a shot at a job that you might not even get anyway, pretty absurd. However if the MA is something the you truely want then go for it, if it helps you land your job great, but remember its not a guarentee.
I think the way I would do it is, I would only enter the program if I got the internship, and only stay in if I get an offer.
I'm thinking about doing something similar to sharp - I didn't decide I wanted to do banking until this summer so I don't have an internship. I'm thinking about applying for internships this year, then taking a gap year after I complete my internship (I go to a target school and have good stats). Think this is doable, or will banks be hesitant to hire seniors as interns?
I personally know someone who did this at a BB, the key is to have a great story, "I'm going to go save orphans in Africa for a year" or something like that. Then you actually have to do it. Also have a great story for why you have'nt pursued IB earlier, "I didn't know about it" probably won't cut it. If you did something meaningful in your previous summers tell them about it and spin it.
