Do I have a shot at a M7 Deferred MBA?
Wanted to preface this with I was born and raised in the US and am half white and half Filipino male. I identify significantly more with Filipino and am curious to know if during the application it'd be better to check white or asian (or does business school go more in depth and allow you to select like southeasthern asian?).
Background:
Current senior at a complete non-core school, CUNY iykyk
GPA: 3.9 majoring in Economics
On-Campus: Leadership roles in 4 different organizations, one of them I co-founded and we currently have over 40 members now.
3 of the organizations are finance oriented
1 of the organizations is the Diversity & Inclusion initiative at my school
Work Experience:
A few different internships in business but the big seller is my junior summer:
Goldman Sachs IBD, where I will be returning full-time
Long-term Goals:
The organization I built out is an ESG fund that manages roughly $35,000 we fundraised and we actively manage a sustainable portfolio and train underclassman to understand the need for ESG.
My story for an deferred MBA would be: I want to gain an incredible understanding of how business and finance works during my time at GS, and use that experience to launch my own ESG fund.
I really appreciate any insight! Also do you recommend paying for one of those big consulting services? My school does not have a great foundation and deferred MBAs are pretty new to most top bschools.
The short answer is yes. I don't see that you shared your standardized test score. A strong (730+) score will nicely complement your solid UG performance and outstanding leadership profile. Congrats on securing an IBD position at Goldman!
In the end, the success of your application will come down to how well you can tell your story. What motivates your interest in ESG? What impact do you want to make in the short and long term? You also need to align your goals with the resources of the programs you are considering. Take a look at what these schools offer in terms of ESG or sustainability initiatives. You might take a look at MIT Sloan which offers a sustainability certificate.

You're absolutely correct, forgot to share my test scores. Haven't taken the GMAT yet, but scored 1550 on the SAT and practice tests indicate a score between 730-780. Assuming a 730, I hope I could lock down a top 3. CUNY has sent a couple kids to Harvard Law (very few but still have in the past few years). Also would you recommend putting Asian or White (or is there a subsector for southeast asian)?
I've actually had the pleasure of speaking with a number of ESG / Access Impact Funds (think Cornerstone Capital) and even met with the C-suite there so I think I have at least a decently compelling story for ESG. Let me know your thoughts!
H/S will be a stretch even with a 730. They are looking to lock in candidates who bring unique perspectives or 'spikey' candidates who stand out in one particular way. I think it is even more challenging to show this as a deferred enrollment candidate. It has less to do with your undergrad being a non-target and more to do with the fact that you are pursuing a farily 'standard' pre-MBA route with IB. I think Wharton is very possible for you.
In terms of indicating white vs. Asian, I think some of the applications allow you to pick more than one. Perhaps your story will showcase your Filipino heritage which will differentiate you from other Asian profiles that are perhaps more widely represented.
It'll be tough to get in purely from your non-target status. If you saw the class profiles for deferred MBA admits at the top schools, you'll see maybe 1 out of every 20 students who have not come from a T15 undergrad. Great story though and top tier WE so you might be able to squeeze through. good luck with it
