Feeling like shit after interview
Hey guys, I'm kinda venting rn so here goes:
I had an interview I had been prepping for a month, and the behaviorals went perfect but the dude who asked me techs finished it all in 15 min and asked super vague basic stuff and didn't ask me to elaborate or really give me an opportunity to show my knowledge. It ended in half the time it should've, and I've been feeling dread since. I can't stop subconsciously being super hard on myself even though I could not have helped it and the dude was really a dick. Thing is I'm international and not many banks sponsor and I can't help feeling like I lost my best shot at getting into IB through diversity recruiting. I just need to pick myself up and get back to the races, but no matter what I do I can't stop blaming myself. Any advice?
Thanks for reading
Hey man, another prospect going thru regular recruiting. I feel you man, I prepared so much for one of my interviews, only to make mistakes. What I would do is just take a deep breath, know that its only April, and you got months ahead of you to show off your skills at other places. Don't get too down on yourself, since that will snowball, but keep your chin up man. You will lock something down. Also, if the guy was acting like that then maybe you don't want to be there anyways. just my 2c
Thank you, I needed to hear that. It's just so much FOMO because I can only apply to like 7 banks
Same thing happened to me last year. Interviewed with Nomura just to test the waters and get some practice (because why else would anyone interview with them). I got an email from a VP asking if I’d be able to interview in 30 minutes. As soon as I got on the phone he told me that he was really busy and that he could only spare 15 minutes.
Clearly, he felt like he was doing me a favor. We went over my background and my interest in IB. He went on to say how my experience was better suited for consulting or other finance related roles. Mind you, I did an IB sophomore summer internship the previous year with BAML. Dude was hostile for the entire 15 minutes. After asking some technical questions, he started ranting about Nomura and asked why I wanted to work for them. To what I answered, “before this call there was a small probability that I’d have accepted an offer if extended, after talking to you, I would rather teach philosophy than to consider your firm” and proceeded to hang up. He must have been overcompensating for the lack of deal flow, who knows?
Moral of the story is that sometimes you will come across some assholes. However, there are many cool people in this industry who genuinely try their best to recruit talent. Keep grinding and I promise that your efforts won’t go unnoticed.
Best of luck!
Props to you that must've felt great lol
You have no idea. Worked out great at the end so no regrets. If that’s how the interviewer treats you imagine how it’ll be once you actually work there
Wish I had the balls to do something like that. Had a superday where an interviewer cut me off midway through every answer, gave me three word responses to my questions, ranted about his previous firm (better) and then claimed he was the best MD in the group.
Anyone who ever went to an interview will eventually meet a very hostile interviewer. doesn't matter the reason, this happens and there is not much you can do about it. There are a thousand different scenarios why interviews go sideways, maybe it was gender, race, accent, sexual orientation, or simply the fact they needed people to fail or wanted to see how an applicant reacts to a negative setting.
Don't let this get you down, look forward to the next potential interview or opportunity.
Hey - interesting some of my BB/EB offers actually came from interviews that ended early (got in where I work now even as the 1/2 round interviews were cut short by half since we finished everything there was to cover). If you felt your technicals and competency questions were on point it could be the case that there was no need to force convo for 20+ mins to save everyone time so until you get dinged keep believing!
When I was trying to make my way into IB I found myself in similar situations where I would walk out of interviews thinking about all of the things I could have done differently and how I wish this or that had happened and I would obsess over these things for sometimes days at a time. It was a very depressing mindset to be in, but then one day I came to the realization that the interview was over and all the what-ifs in the world weren't going to change what had already happened. At the end of the day it is what it is and all you can do is hope for the best and find the best path forward to achieve your goals.
just wanted to say, good luck! don't sweat it
