The link below should provide a pretty good introduction. Hope that helps.

Thank you for this.
if you have suit pants consider getting them tailored.
Fashion is overrated imho. Soft skills are better.
I'm from India and I see a lot of Indian guys over-do fashion. A three piece suit doesnt do jack shiet when once you open your mouth the other person requires Rosetta Stone or starts bleeding.
Soft skills > fashion imho.
What u mean by basic? What are the basic items u should (means nothing) buy? Or basic stylistic consideration, like what matches with what, or should i wea this on top of this?
Basic stylist consideration.
do you he any style in mind? any actor or singer who you like how they dress?
The best fashion accessory is a good arm candy.
If you bring a cute girl(friend) to your social outings, it (she) is worth more than any fashion accessory.

Good advice all in one post. Thanks for summing them all up :D
Wow, this is excellent. Thank you! I'm going to forward these links on to the few analysts in my group who haven't figured out how to dress yet.

That article kinda sucks balls. And buzzfeed? Dude...
Corny? Maybe. On point? Definitely.
Silly and simple (and Buzzfeed), but all of the tips were pretty good advice.
Thanks, that was all I needed to read.
lol what is it with people and those ridiculous looking socks
2 showcasing an... aggressive pant fit.
Generally my main goal is to make sure I'm not naked when I leave in the morning. I have a really high success rate (90%+).

Authoritative Guide To Mens Business Attire
Unlimited Price Range: 1. Suits: Oxxford bespoke ($4,000+), Saville row bespoke ($3,000+), Leonard Longsdale bespoke ($3,000+). Others like Turnbull and Asser on the English side or Kiton on the Italian side are simply not worth the price. They will cost $2500 at a minimum and will be off the rack. They will not be MTM or bespoke. 2. Shirts: Turnbull and Asser bespoke or MTM ($300-550, 6 shirt minimum order for bespoke, 3 for MTM). T&A is my preference, however any Jermyn St. maker will be great. Brioni and Charvet are also great. Prepare to pay at least $400 for these. The T&A are more institutionally aristocratic and my preference. 3. Shoes: John Lobb ($1000 OTR - $2000 bespoke). Edward Green (1000 OTR - $2000 bespoke). 4. Ties: T&A ($140), Hermes ($140), Brioni ($140), Charvet ($140).
Upperend price: 1. Suits: Oxxford OTR ($2500+), Saville row OTR ($1500+) 2. Shirts: T&A OTR ($250-400), Hilditch and Key ($200+), Eton (200+), really any Jermyn St. maker. 3. Shoes: Crockett and Jones ($550 - 800) 4. Same as unlimited
Mid range: 1. Suits: Brooks ($600+), Hickey Freeman ($600+) 2. Shirts: Brooks, Pink, Ben Silver 3. Shoes: Churchs 4. Ties: Brooks
what about pants?
pants are included in the suit.
If I want to buy separate trousers, what are some good brands?
Ralph Lauren Blue or Purple Label, J Press
Danny T, how about Charles Tyrwhitt. I would say they are comparable to Ben Silver, Pink but they are technically Jermyn St. right?
CT compare to pink. it would be in mid range.
I think Pink fits better than CT, but CT is a better value, and plus two for the brass collar bones! I just put in an order for some shirts from Hamilton today, it is hard to restrain oneself in that situation.
I have a bad habit of getting on the internet while I'm drunk (I'm not now, don't worry) and that's actually how I ended up with 5 CT shirts as well as 1 tie. Really though, I was planning on buying them sooner or later and I'm glad I actually bought them sooner. Ditto on the brass stays. Gotta love the attn to detail!
Also, I have heard that T&A does a very poor job with pattern matching. It might be a moot point to some, but if i am buying a custom shirt, I expect the patterns to match. Whats your experience been Dan?
i have had 2 T&A shirts. i got them when i was a 47 17.5. im now a 50 18 and i decided to cheap it on some brooks. T&A are by far superior.
I say just go to Macy's and get some quality men's attires. They have lots of selections and inexpensive too!
It seems that everyone on this board, but especially the wannabe-analysts such as dan bush, are grossly overestimating the importance of attire and appearance in general. I interviewed in a fucking $150 off-the-rack 25% polyester suit, and got several offers at BBs. I'm now among the top performers in my associate class, and I'm still wearing suits in that price range. The truth is, as long as you're a lowly analyst/associate, the quality of your models/books matters way more than how you dress.
And if you're wearing a bespoke suit, everyone knows that you're just keeping up appearances anyway, because you basically cant afford it (especially as an analyst).
From the ghetto
Seriously as an analyst, why would you do this? This thread is clearly not realistic; for OP to want this stickied or atleast recognition for the "definitive dress code" it is pretty ridiculous. Since most of this forum are analysts or wanna-bes (and maybe a couple of associates), to tell them to spend atleast 15k for a decent wardrobe is ridiculous.
I myself am in consulting (very prestigious firm, lots of client exposure etc.) and the line is "2-3 suits (one grey, one navy) and 7-8 dress shirts, couple of pairs of shoe". I spend WAY more than a lot of my friends on clothes (bad habit) and I recently bought a Joseph Abboud suit (on 50% sale) for $300 with alterations. THAT is probably as high class as you need to go at the analyst level. People who tell you otherwise are idiots (bespoke suits, wtf?!?!).
The reason this thread pisses me off is that there are a few posters on here who seem to have no idea wtf they are talking about and simply regurgitate stuff they hear from others and make up stuff which fits their own warped sense of what ibanking should be. I usually laugh at the "GS>MS" or "UBS LA>Lehman" or "Lehman > UBS" because those threads are trivial in my opinion. However these posts have the potential to gradually push some poor guy's expectations of how much he MINIMUM has to spend to keep up with the Joneses' and this is real money we are talking about for someone just starting out in their career.
For what its worth...
Ya seriously. The best summers in my group just looked presentable. Geoffrey Beene is fine; its not embarassing and no one is going to tell you otherwise as an analyst.
if you like clothes, be my guest and spend on them. otherwise, just wash your shirts regularly and make sure they are pressed.
The best trousers are made by Zanella. They go from $50-200.
mytailor.com is the shit. Word.
And most Charvet ties cost $165; $250 if you want to be a true baller and get the ones with silver or gold woven into them.
bespoke suits arent very good when your right out of college as your body will inevitably change over time. itll be a waste of money if you spend $3000 on a suit that you cant wear a year later.
Bespoke Suits, Brioni Ties, Crockett & Jones shoes etc for an analyst ? You gotta be kidding me man
look if you think its ridiculous you need to forget about the unlimited price range. its a guide to mens business attire. it is not an anlysts guide. if your an analyst or a prospective and ur unsure then you need to look at the mid price range level. i left out low price b/c at that point the cheapest would be your best bet.
From the ghetto...
As someone who has bought suits of very differing qualities, I know there is a HUGE gap in the "low price" range. Saying that you should simply buy the cheapest is completely wrong. Bottom line, if you really wanted this to be a useful thread you would give advice on which suits lbs and I've had to change my suit sizes twice in the past 2 years, so keep that in mind as well.

LOL u and the mods are gonna rule this thread with an iron fist? wat if we start talking about baseball? since that's not "allowed" wat would the punishment be? ....god this kid is a tool.......
Just a comment, when I was talking to a mentor of mine who's worked in banking/real estate with GS, MS, CS, Barclays and pretty much everyone else on the street. His advice was look good but don't try to look like you fucking own the place because then you either "look to rich" or don't look hungry enough or both. If you are rolling into work in 4k worth of clothes each day, I don't think as a summer or 1st year that's the message you want to sent honestly. Also as a 1st year think about who you are encountering and what need is there to wear 5k in clothing. But if you just enjoy clothes then enjoy them.
totally agree with you. if you have the money and enjoy these items then go for it. if you dont then buy what you like. this guide just sets the lanes and people are certainly free to move in and out.
What about white contrast collars? Also, french cuffs? Acceptable or not?
in the cheap range provide the best fit/quality for the price.
Anyone at the analyst level should just wait for a big sale, go to a dept store and get a really nice suit + alterations for 350,400. Also if you lift weights at all, keep it a little loose. In the past two years I've had to change my suit size twice. Joseph Abboud and Hugo Boss tend to be a little looser around the shoulders and arms so I go for those.
