A (possibly) stupid question

Hi everybody! This will be my first post here in WSO, so nice to meet you all!
A quick profile: I'm 19 years old, European, studying at a decent at best university in the UK, doing an internship at a major luxury company at the moment after completing my first year of studying

During my internship, I am working in operations and being exposed to change management as they are changing their processes in their stores, etc.
This and talking to a friend, whom I very much look up to and who is pursuing a career in consulting, I have become more and more interested in a career in consulting. I am on page ~9/~175 on my quest to read all of the precious knowledge and advice WSO's Consulting Cabaret has to offer!

I study marketing, which I love, and have (up until now) always wanted to do marketing in a luxury goods company but not so much anymore. I have realized that consulting offers so many opportunities for growth and how great it could be to be able to study and help companies in various industries.

Now here is my first question to you:
Is there something like consulting specializing in marketing? And if yes, is there a high demand for it?
I would love working with luxury goods companies as a consultant to help with their marketing but would also be thrilled to experience working with fast moving consumer goods companies in which marketing is so critical.

Is it looked down upon in comparison to corporate finance, etc. or does it have the same level of "prestige"?

Are salaries and career advancement opportunities similar or the same?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions and not really being concise.
I would really appreciate any advice I could get from the WSO community! Thank you so much for your time!

Sure, there are consulting positions that specialize in marketing. That said, I don't think consulting is the best career path for marketing.

First, career paths in consulting for marketing: * Some consultances, such as ZS Associates or Cambridge Group, specialize in marketing. The former in pharmacutical sales, the latter in in market segmentation / demand analysis * At tech firms like Accenture, they will surely have a CRM group * At general management consultancies (e.g., MBB, etc.) some partners will have expertise in sales force effectiveness, brand management, etc. That said, these are somewhat "niche" expertise areas. It can be harder to quantify the impact of this consulting. Something like sourcing/procurement, it is easy to quantify the impact of consulting, and thus easier to get work.

That said, while MBB w/ a focus on demand/marketing would be great, you're not guaranteed to end up in this area if you went to MBB. I think if you are determined to go with marketing, brand management is the way to go. Head to a name-brand company like P&G, and you'll be pretty well setup for a longer term career in marketing. I think MBB in general is a better career path than consumer packaged goods (CPG), but the latter gives guaranteed marketing position.

just a rant. hope it helps.
