A quick question for NYC frequent flyers
I'm about to move to NYC for b-school and am planning on having to travel back to the midwest a bunch while I'm there, and also expect to be traveling for work after graduating. NYC monkeys that travel a bunch for work, do you use Southwest a lot? I prefer Southwest but the downside is that it only flies into LaGuardia vs. JFK. Wasn't sure if this was a big deterrent for frequent flyers. I was going to get the Southwest credit card but probably won't if I'll have to fly other airlines because it's easier to get to JFK.
Opinions?
Delta? Both LGA and JFK are hubs for them, and they fly international so you can actually use those points for something fun...
American or Delta.
FYI you can get to Laguardia (or Newark) via public transit, if you're hell bent on sticking with Southwest.
Yeah I've done it, it's just a trek
Taxi is an even better experience, but that's like $40 to LGA and $70 to EWR or JFK.
I'd consider Newark as well -- not to mention a relatively nicer airport that LGA/JFK. United hub and can get to MDW on Southwest there.
i wouldn't fly back to midwest. new york's got plenty of cats.
American has a hub at OHare and does a lot of flights between Newark and Chicago.
Delta has the same.
Alaska Airlines has a mileage program that works with both. And elite status on Alaska (which can be earned on a combination of American and Delta miles) translates over to American and Delta IIRC.
Use a travel site. I never book directly through an airline because travel sites are almost always cheaper for me. And LGA is actually closer to manhattan. Not really a difference in airports though. I even use Newark at times because Newark is occasionally cheaper and about the same distance.
Not sure the issue you have with LaGuardia. I was just in bschool and flew to NYC about once a month for the past two years. Personally, I preferred LaGuardia because it was less crowded and a cheaper taxi to the city.
I've never flown into JFK but LaGuardia took a while to get into the city because I did the bus to subway route. A good deal but took a while. I thought JFK was way more convenient given that it's connected to the subway.
It really depends on where you live but generally LGA is better after MTA started Q70 limited a while ago. During rush hours I always take subway to Jackson height (EFMR7) and transfer to Q70 limited (8 minutes non-stop to LGA). It is definitely shorter than E->AirTrain. During non-rush hours I just take cab and LGA cab fare is like half compared to JFK.
Of course LGA facility is like sh*t (except new Delta terminal and Amex centurion lounge) but do you really care? I always arrive airport 1hr before flight departs (1.5hrs for international) so I rarely use any facilities
