A spring part time internship - is it worth taking this?
Background: junior, a target math&finance major, strongly into trading and quant analyses&strategies.
-will soon go under the SA interview process but I haven't fixed down any offer.
-don't live in NYC or Chicago, where there are more(and perhap better) internship opportunities.
I may be able to work as a part time intern for a small start-up firm in my area, and the work I'll be doing will be only marginally related to trading and quant stuff. The firm's focus is mostly private equity, or to be more exact, something that's related to private equity and deal making. I'll have to run a lot of errands and research. I guess I will have tons of chances to network with the people in the banking industry though.
Do you guys think I should take this offer? I'm still in the process, but I think my chance is relatively high. For this position I will have to reduce my coursework in favor of getting to know more people in the industry and learn the work(which isn't going to help me anyway in the immediate sense), and I was initially planning to get more programming skills under my belt this semester.
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
Sure, I did IBD before my S&T SA interviews. It's good to get experience in the field, it gives you something tangible to talk about during interviews even if its not directly related to trading. At the very least, you can use it to springboard the conversation towards something along the lines of "The field was interesting, but I am looking for something with a faster pace..." etc.
Find a way to come into the Big City. Intern there and find a cheap place to live.
