Just excel is fine, though having more than that won't hurt you...
Basic Excel skills are all that is needed. It's more about understanding how financial statements flow and the drivers of value.
You can get as complicated as you want, but you often end up with a garbage in, garbage out problem. I've used Crystal Ball before and the issue is specifying the model properly or you end up with results that don't make any sense.
At the end of the day, you will use the models to aide and support your final investment recommendation.
