Accepting offer / serving notice - UK employment

I have received a job offer (with 7 days to accept) with a start date of September, and am currently working full-time a different employer.

I would like to accept the new job offer, however there are 6 months until the start date, for which I need to keep employment with my current employer to pay the bills, would it be normal practice to accept the offer but not serve my notice on my current role until closer to the time?

They new employer will want to take up references with my old employer, however doing this would notify them of my intention to leave. On the other hand if I notify my employer now that I'm leaving in 6 months it would make things very difficult, and I imagine they would want to terminate my contract before Sep.

(This is in the UK)

My current contract stipulates 1 months notice. But I just wonder if I hand in my notice now, do they have grounds to terminate my contract earlier the September.

Another problem is that my current employment involves a lot of training/courses that my employer would not want to pay for if they knew I was leaving in September.

Would people really give such long notice in this position?
