Accounting Intern Transitioning to Finance?

So, currently I am a student at an non-target with an average GPA of 3.1, going into my junior year. I know I can raise my GPA within the future, but at it's current state, I think it might be holding me back. I have had an accounting/payroll internship after my freshman year, that transitioned to an accounts receivable position this summer(following my sophomore year). The role is working in a pretty large, and financially well school district.

However, I am an finance major and want to seek out an internship in a finance oriented position, preferably in the greater Chicago area, or downtown. I have other positions of campus that should help differentiate myself from others. I want to know what I can do to separate myself more.

What steps should I take to help my chances of finding an internship? Should I be able to use my past experience as leverage into positions like AM, PWM, and other finance roles?
