Acquisitions Analyst way out
I currently work for a large real estate development company as an acquisitions analyst. I'm wondering what would be a logical alternative real estate career after acquisitions (something away from still at a desk for hours). I was thinking a PM?
Any ideas?
I would say a PM or Development Associate position would work well. Still has a financial side yet not stuck behind a computer modeling all day. Be careful with DA position though as some work much like an Acq. or AM associate.
Good to know, thank you.
How long have you been working on the acquisitions side? Most roles that you would lateral into are going to have at least a fair amount of desk work at the junior level. Unless you are unbelievably restless/sick of the job, might be an easier path for you to gain enough experience to make an upward/diagonal move to a less analytical role in the business.
This opie. I thought I wanted to go the PM route until I spent a day as a PM (shadowed someone in the office) - wanted to fucking kill myself.
No thanks jeff
Acquisitions analyst exit opps, preparing for the next opportunity (Originally Posted: 02/06/2013)
Looking for advice on how to prepare for my next step after working as an acquisitions analyst.
Current: I am currently at a mid-size multi-family acquisition firm that focuses on West Coast assets. I spend my time primarily looking at value-add acquisitions in SoCal. We are typically the JV partner with a larger pension fund, capital partner that lends our local expertise to each deal. 1 year of experience. First and only real estate direct investing experience. Excited to stick around through the associate level.
Past experience: spent my first 2 years out of undergrad at a 1.5bn fund of hedge funds (that did not invest in real estate assets). Top 10 undergrad business programs.
Exit???: Based on this quick summary what are my realistic exit opps?
I would like to break into a firm with a wider investment mandate (ie more than just multifamily, value-add: development, redevelopment etc) and that manages a fund(s)--in short PRAYING for a shot at REPE that invests in development opportunities.
I have considered joining the ULI Young Leaders (any experience with this?) and generally building a more robust network.
Other designations I should be working to as I continue to work in this analyst role?
Extracurriculars I should be considering?
Should I be thinking about how to be a better MBA candidate?
Any and all feedback appreciated!
What's the comp structure like at your shop for analysts and associates, if you don't mind me asking?
I definitely recommend NAIOP and ULI. i have found their development challenges and mentoring programs to be very useful for networking, and networking is key in this business.
