Advice for Canadian student at non-target (UBC/Sauder) with an average gpa (sub 3.5). Any advice would be appreciated!!
I have no industry connections, mediocre grades due to transferring programs to commerce pretty late, and I have no relevant internship experience or EC's. Im finding its hard to even get involved on campus since clubs ask for your grades and previous experience which I don't stand out in. I don't even have a preference for an area of finance right now, i'd just like to get an internship in anything( S&T, AM, ER,PE, IB) so i can determine what I like most. It is my understanding getting into investment banking is easier than equity research? I am open to anything though, including asset management. I am based in Vancouver btw. Any advice would be appreciated. Im not going to take no for an answer and wait on my ass for something to happen. I want this, and if anyone can provide me some solutions/ advice i haven't thought of, I would really appreciate it. Thanks
I'm in Vancouver too and I wouldn't really bother trying for anything local. Pretty much all shitty pink sheet promoters with bullshit mining deals.
what would you suggest i do then to break into the industry?
There are some OKish MM firms here which I guess you could apply for. Shouldn't be too hard. They don't pay much though and long term you will 100% want to get to the states.

So I posted a while back about trying to break into the industry, and looking for tips on how to break into the industry. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck but have been sitting down with local industry professionals and trying to learn as much as I can about the different specialties in finance. In doing so, I've developed and interest in the sales side of sales and trading but don't know how to go about landing an internship with one of the banks since I have no relevant experience in finance. But I do have retail sales experience and strong commissions records. My resume is fairly weak and my gpa is around 3.4. I played sports in high school and have hobbies outside of school but have done nothing too special in university for various reasons. Im finding it hard to get an executive position in the clubs at school since people tend to reserve them for "friends". Im based in Vancouver, Canada so that also limits the number of spots available in banks each year. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
