I can consider it as a new destination I suppose. They unfortunately speak a different Chinese language so I'd just be an English speaker there.
I mean people do speak cantonese . But I believe at the large BBs there they would speak mandarin. Many of my Chinese oxbridge peers (who came from mainland China) ended up working in HK.
I suppose I could see if they would hire me for some roles. It's expensive as hell I've heard.

Just checked it out and for a single guy, if I get salaries similar to what I'd get in the UK I'd save about the same.
In Shenzhen if I got paid €20,000 a year I'd save the same as I would on a €35,000 salary in Ireland lol.
You will save a lot more in HK, compared to London
Assuming similar costs of living (higher rent in HK, but less on food, restaurants, expenses etc) and the same salary: 100K GBP after tax is just 67K GBP, whereas in HK 1.1M HKD is 915K (85K GBP) after tax... 31% more, and this gap increases as you earn more
And considering post-Brexit GBP, salaries in HK will also be higher by ~30% compared to London for equivalent entry-level finance roles
It's a massive difference... >50% more net saved in HK
Being white and also able to speak Mandarin is definitely a plus in HK. The market is dominated by Chinese business and you’ll use Mandarin a lot at your job. In terms of daily life though, yeah English would probably work better as a lot locals don’t speak Mandarin that well.
I'll learn a bit of Cantonese while I'm there if I go, shouldn't be as difficult after knowing Mandarin. Do you know much about the firm's there? As in, do they hire from EU?
Mainland Chinese working in HK:
Not sure of Mainland job market, but for HK you definitely have good chance of recruiting with BBs if you speak both English/Mandarin fluently and have good education/internship backgrounds. From what I've seen, being white only lowers your chance when you don't speak Mandarin and are not senior enough.

They also speak English and Mandarin so it's the perfect combination for me. I've been mulling over the different cities I could go to and it seems like I'll choose between there, Dublin or London. I'll have to see who hires me and how much they pay now.
That's great! I strongly recommend Singapore if u get the chance. It's the perfect mix of a high growth and high wage economy. There's also the opportunity to meet great people too!
