Advice for International Student
Was just wondering if anyone here could provide some advice to an international student. Majoring in Finance and currently in my Junior year, do not have an internship lined up yet for this summer. One thing I struggle with is that every application asks whether I will require sponsorship in the future. The whole struggle makes me wonder whether it's worth it to pursue working in the US, or just go back to my home country (Western Europe) and seek a job there. Any advice is appreciated
Adjustment in the new country is the first thing you should learn.
If HR/the company asks this question you would have to be honest anyway. they have e-verify and can see whether you are eligible to work or not.
Normally people go the CPT/OPT route, with STEM you can have up to 3 years. This gives you multiple attempts at securing a H1b and that again gives you a path to citizenship.
This is a lot of work and takes a lot of money and time, but if you like living in the USA it might be the only way.
I'd argue you'd have to invest about 10 years and then could get on route for citizenship. (4 years UG + OPT 3 years + H1b 6 years + time for adjudication, etc)
Where, in Europe, you still have freedom of movement and can live and work in any EU country. Most Europeans I know eventually go back to Europe anyway due to family commitments and they miss their friends.
Normally, the cost of US attendance/tuition and CoL (for EU folks) is only worth it if you actually want to live and work in the US. Since most EU schools are free of charge or almost free, you'd otherwise have the same or a better outcome if you studied at home.
in the same boat and am thinking of giving up on the US unless I get married (but who tf gets married at 21)
A company can file for your sponsorship or place you in i.e. Canada and then get you back on L1.
Getting married for a visa is most likely not realistic and also not permitted. Also, you need proof of a bona fide marriage, meaning credit card, mortgage, car loans, insurances, etc in both of your names. that is a lot of trust afforded to someone you don't know. Huge risk.
yeah but companies don't really want to do that, I have authorization for the UK so might just make the jump bc I don't want to deal w the hassle :/ just sucks that I have to move and rebuild my entire life again
Are you studying in the US?
He refers to himself as "an international student" - my assumption was he is currently on F1 in the US. I could be wrong though? Could OP get back to us?
