Advice for new HF guy?
So, I'm soon to take an job at either a CTA/managed futures fund or a global macro fund, both around $1-2b AUM. At one I'd be focused more on monitoring automated trading (24 hr), the other sounds like I'd have more hands-on trading exposure. In both I'd probably help out with a variety of roles, including some research.
My background is probably different than most on this site. I'm 23, this is my first job in finance, didn't do the standard ibanking track, and my resume has some flaws. (Some bright spots too.) I'm excited about the jobs since I had a tough time finding something for while, but I have no clue what to think of them as career moves. For instance, I'm interested in getting into PE, but not sure how to without IB experience/visibility. What should I think about in terms of getting into a position where I have more responsibility for investment decisions? (Not necessarily sole responsibility.) Would love to compare notes with someone who had a similar experience and get some insight on working at a HF. Drop me a PM and maybe I can email you?
cmon, help a HF newb do some career brainstorming! :D
I worked at CTA for a while.
How many people are at the shop?
If they are trading around the clock...and it is a small staff... it can lead to a pretty shitty lifestyle.
I was carrying around a handheld all of the time that would alert me when a market was closing in on one of our exit or entry points. I still hear "phantom rings" from my handheld device in the middle of the night.
I learned a lot in that role and overall it was very enjoyable. I did, however, struggle at first when I left the futures industry. Your skills will be very hf centric and not necessarily "work" in other industries.
hope that helps.
i'd guess 10-20 ppl at both places. definitely a bit leery about the 24hr trading, but as I understand they work in 3 shifts and I'd be more of a caller than on-call. so it could be weird hours but not bad workload compared to an IB analyst. my main concern is whether I'd be gaining widely applicable skills like you said. thx for the input!
so I start tomorrow, who else wants to chat? :D
Hey MarginCalling, how did you land this job? I am 23 also and currently have a headhunter calling up the shops for me. Have a good start and let me know how things go for you.
