Advice on career change strategy!!!!!!

Right now im self employed and im looking to make a shift in my career. After closely studying the branches of banking I believe asset management appeals more to my personality, im use to putting in long hours, researching and above all im use to interacting with clients. I currently live in Greece and I hold a degree in business&marketing but I plan to move to New York (since I was born and raised there).
Any advice on how I can get my foot in the door?? I've read that starting at a trust department inside a bank is a good place to begin.

I know the way to go is through a top MBA program but $$$ can be an issue, until I complete the program. So id rather start working once I get to NY and enroll in a part time program in order to get some working experience and apply what i will be learning directly!!! But im not sure of my startegy....plus im not getting any younger!!!!

well NYU Stern Part-time is good, as is UChicago Part-time MBA. I believe admission is easier too.

Downfall is that recruiting for part-timers isn't as good as full-timers. But I think (but not sure) that it would still be fine.

Otherwise you should know that just about everybody takes out loans.

If $ is a problem, stay far away from NYC.

As far as the job goes, I would try to work some contacts. If you were born and raised in NY it would be hard to think that you don't know a good amount of people working in finance. If you dont, did you go to school in the US? Check the alumni network.

Asset Management is a really broad term, can you be more specific on what exactly you want to do?

Actually i've been living in Greece for fifteen years and i went to an "American" College which is acredited by NEASC (I guess this doesnt really amount to anything). I contacted several people while I was in NY during the summer which work for banks, there expertise were mostly in compliance and operations in IB divisions. Now as for where I want to end up, career wise, is in fund management so I guess starting as an analyst on the buy side is the right way to go. What im trying to say is that rather than putting together pitch books for M&A deals id rather work 100h/w analysing companies and contributing to reccomendations. Ultimately, rotating through different asset classes (equities, real estate, currencies etc.) and gaining a more complete knowledge of all the investment opportunities is what I want to do. HOW CAN I GET THERE??? If I can from where I am. Ill risk a loan for NYU if its worth it. p.s. sorry for the long reply!!!!

Sounds like it would be a good fit for you. Also entry positions at places like TIAA-Cref, American Funds, even PIMCO to a degree might be a good place to start, but that is not i-banking and I personally don't know much about those places, but I would imagine given you ultimate goal those would be good places to go.
