Advice on Getting into RE IB?
First-time poster here, so we'll see how this goes! I am looking for some pointers on breaking into the RE IB industry post-grad. I am a current MSF candidate at a non-target and have an AM internship lined up for this summer at a top REIT within its sector. I know the move from AM to IB can be challenging but I have heard that the recruiting process for RE IB is quite different and much less formulaic than other groups. The hope is that this can somehow work to my advantage, but I really don't know, hence this post!
Just reach out to people who work in REIB. People who want to work in investment banking generally avoid the RE group given how different it is from a more traditional group. If you have direct real estate experience, and you know you’re interested in REIB you’re already in a good spot.
Just be sure to have a good answer for why REIB as opposed to acquisitions, lending, development etc. Also need to know your real estate specific valuation methods / terms (FFO, AFFO, NAV, NOI etc) in addition to all the standard IB interview questions.
I will say that REIB groups care more about pedigree compared to most real estate firms, so it may not be easy.
All very good points. Given your response, does that mean you think that having worked at a REIT will give me a fighting chance during the application process?
