Advice on switching groups from one summer to the next?
I'm a rising junior currently interning in debt origination. I get to work on the trading floor, so my job gives me a look into some banking aspects and some trading aspects. I've only been working for a week, but I can tell that trading would interest me more as a career rather than what I'm doing now.
I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on switching into trading for next summer, especially if I get an offer to return to my group. We work pretty closely with the traders (we have to keep each other updated on pricing), so I have the opportunity to watch them and maybe ingratiate myself with them. On the other hand, I'm pretty intimidated by them -- they seem really busy all the time, and I don't want to annoy them.
Would a VP/MD be offended if after getting an offer, I said I was interested in returning to the bank (which I am), but in a different role? Should I wait until after I get a return offer (and yes, I know not to count my chickens), or make it clear a bit before? Tact is key, I'm guessing.
just remember that your first priority is to secure an offer. once you have that, you have a lot more leverage with regards to where you want to go, etc. just don't let it be known that you are looking at other groups... make it seem that your current group was your first choice all along. you can always change and just say that you had a great experience but wanted to try something new.
those MD/VPs are big boys. they'll understand if you want to try something else.
Any other comments? My lust for trading is only growing stronger. Structured products (structured rates and credit; not so much structured notes) seems pretty cool; I actually sit right next to (on the same physical desk) a few of their sales guys.
Lust? Take a cold shower.
