Advice Welcomed
Hey fellow WSO monkeys, looking to be a rather long post, but any and all advice is much appreciated.
Background- Keeping brief to try and save y'all time
Going into 3rd year of college (non-target) but have teachers who teach at targets w/ a few connections
Mediocre 3.7 GPA, will be over 3.8 by the end of current semester
Freshman --> Sophomore with WM partnership with about 450MM AUM
7 months ago got an internship with UBS WM, still working here 3 days / week about 18 hours
Also work 40 hours / week restaurant job on top of 15 units / semester of schooling
Looking to graduate on time (2018) or early at the end of 2017 if I see it to be more beneficial
Six years ago as a freshman in high school I was drawn to the allure of IB due to the large bonuses that were still given in the wake of the recession. As time passed and I researched other finance related positions and became drawn to WM due to the reasonable hours, relaxed lifestyle (once you have your book), and the relations you get to build with your clients over the entirety of your career. Chill hours, building lasting relationships, and still making more than enough money to be happy. Sounds good to me.
However, I want to leave college knowing I opened every door in my path, and really found the career that best suits me. With two years of undergrad to go, I'm going to try to get an internship by the start of my senior year. Would be sweet to be at a bigger known firm, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. Even unpaid if the experienced gained is deemed worthwhile. (Chose HF over IB/PE/etc. because to me it seems you just do what you have to do to earn the dollar. Doesn't matter how. Doesn't matter if the market is good or bad. Just find a way to think outside of the box, and get it done. Less rules more freedom. Something that's always changing keeping you on your toes day in and day out.) Thinking the next 6 mo. studying, preparing, beginning to network heavily. And then the following 6 mo. grind out as many phone calls, applications, and interviews as I can.
All information pertaining to anything you think I could find relevant to me pursuing everything above would be greatly appreciated. Books you think I should read, textbooks to learn what an IB summer internship would teach me among other necessary skills, possible friends or coworkers in the profession in the Southern California area I could meet with / possibly ask to mentor me a while, if you would advise me to stay where I am or even change directions entirely, etc. Anything and everything, I appreciate it. Trying not to leave any stone unturned.
I know the odds are against me and I'm sorry if my terminology is lacking in this field. Will try to keep this post updated with things I find helpful and the progress I make for those who follow.
Thank you!!
