Best Response

It would be best to ask him for book recommendations as it will show initiative and give him the opportunity to mold you the best as possible.

Make things always easy for him. Logistics, meeting prep, meeting minutes, help him prep for the board if needed as well. Don't be afraid to ask him if he needs help and also be a front man to the managers he interacts with to get the point where you can help them with things without eating into your boss' schedule.

Towards the latter part of this role you need to be eyeing up places where you want to be after it. You have the best pick in the company for the prestigious role.

At my former company, I had a meeting with the #2 guy in a large corporation (he was #2 under the CEO out of 400,000 people). His executive assistant was on it. I pretty much interacted with her first. She sat in the meeting and responded to ideas along with him.

Her role was a very high profile one. I mean she traveled around the world with him and when it was finished they gave her a key role overseeing a division as a director. She did have an MBA, but she was 10 years ahead of everyone else who ever got director/partner.

So make the most of it. Have fun with it but work hard and keep your eye out for places that you want to move within the company and start a dialogue early.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee
