Alaskan Substitutes?

I was planning on going on vacation to Alaska this summer with some buddies - it's way too expensive for us right now. Are there any good 'Alaskan experience' type of places in North America? By Alaskan experience I mean networking with bears, fishing, boating and the good
old wilderness. Nova Scotia? Northern Cali? Anything in the Mid-West?

+1

Banff is world class, although in recent years has gotten flooded with more and more tourists (which is really annoying). Western Canada (BC & Alberta) in general though is absolutely beautiful so you could look into somewhere around there that would rival Alaska.

I will check out this bank as well. Thank you for the advice!

I just googled Banff... what a gorgeous place. Definitely considering this. Round trip flights from NY are very reasonable.

Loved my trip to Banff. Another great spot is Glacier National Park in Montana.

after college I did a 7day canoe trip with buddies on the allagash right in Maine. EXTREMELY remote (didn't see another person until the 5th day) and saw a ton of cool animals (bears, moose, eagles). highly recommend, with the caveat that it could be a pain to get to/tough to do without planning.

Churchill CA

You can catch the northern lights there. No more polar bears though

Churchill is amazing. I think the Polars come out in the winter; when the ice freezes over.

How was your experience there?

back in March, I could fly from NY to Alaska for $99. I'm serious.

Lodging is the issue. The prices are nuts. All the camps are duly booked for that time.
