Alcohol during lunch/dinner interviews
Ok, I know this is usually a big no but really? I would feel like a total fuckhead if I made someone drink by themselves if they really intended on drinking vs. testing if I'm a total alcoholic. Any personal anecdotes?
I'd err on the safe side and still go for a non-alcoholic beverage. I think if the interviewer really wouldn't mind you drinking booze either, he/she would vocalize that.
Even then, opt for the non-alcoholic beverage.
just have them order first and reciprocate
If they order Guinness, you order Smithwicks. If they order Macallan, you order Glenlivet. In other words, follow their order but don't order the exact same thing.
Do not allow someone to drink alone.
I've also noticed the interviewer will follow your lead. If the waiter starts with you and you order a water, the interviewer will either say something like "hey we can get beer if you want" at which point you should pick up on the fact that he is hinting that you probably should get beer, or he'll get a water or a coke or something too. No one likes to drink alone, and he doesn't want to create a bad impression of his firm/himself either.
order a short beer
