Alien: Covenant - Review/Discussion *Spoilers*

So guys, I have now seen Covenant twice now andI'm a huge Alien franchise fan.I decided to leave a little review and wanted to know what you guys thought of the film, as well as some questions you may have going into the next installment (Alien: Awakenings)! In bold are some questions I know that many people had leaving Prometheus that I can answer for you in case it wasn't clear.

David?
So, in the film we discover that David commandeers the derelict ship from prometheus with shaw(after she repairs him) and takes it to "Paradise" (the uncharted planet that the covenant will soon discover). Upon arriving to Paradise, we see a little civilization with Engineer-esque inhabitants. These guys surely look like engineers, but are smaller and seem more primitive. When they see the Juggernaut landing they all seem to be happy and rushing towards it to see someone they look up to. I believe that they are waiting for the Engineer from prometheus to come back with news of successfully destroying earth, which was his mission. David then unleashes almost all of the containers of black death onto the entire population, effectively petrifying and killing the entire population. We also discover that David kills shaw to use her body to experiment.. more on that later. Ultimately, we find out David is going haywire and only believes in creation, he wants to create. *Oh, and he wants to see to the end of mankind, as he sees them as a dying species.

What is the black goo?
This was the BIG question ever since prometheus. David answers us subtlety by explaining that the spores on this planet are organic and are the home of parasitic micro-organisms. These organisms will infect ANYTHING that is living (moving meat, as David put it). They use their host to lay what becomes a Neomorph inside said host's body. Neomorphs are the white aliens we see in the trailer and in the movie, they are organic and come straight from being laid by the parasites. They are extremely aggressive, grow very quickly, and are carnivorous. It doesn't seem like their blood is acidic, from what I remember.

So, where do Xenomorphs come from?
David created Xenomorphs... let me explain. To start off, Ridley Scott said himself in a recent interview that David is the creator of the Xenomorphs and that we will see how the Xenomorph we know from Alien(1979) is perfected and developed throughout the following movies. In Alien: Covenant, the Xenomorph doesn't have the biomechanical features that it does in Alien. This may be because David has been creating these Xenomorphs from Shaw's ovaries which he harvested, and Shaw is a human.
David has been experimenting with neomorphs in his lair underground and developed the eggs with face-huggers inside them. My belief is that he either harvested Shaw's ovaries and genetically modified them into the eggs we all know and love, OR that he created the eggs himself by building from the spores on the planet that hold the "black stuff" which is actually little parasites that infect hosts. These parasites were enhanced into face-huggers. You know the rest. Face-hugger -> Human -> Chest/Back bursting Xeno.

My overall take on the film
After my initial viewing on Thursday, I left kind of disappointed. I was expecting this movie to be a slow, dramatic, suspenseful, creepy, terrifying movie in which the Xeno hunts down our characters and shows us why he is the baddest and smartest alien to NOT fuck with. In this movie, the aliens are more like rabid dogs that don't think too much and are driven by pure aggression and instinct. The Alien from 1979 was very calculated, intelligent, and cunning. This one is just a maniac hellbent on killing everybody, which in it's own way is scary, but not what was expected.

After viewing it a second time I learned to appreciate the movie for what it actually is trying to be. Alien: Covenant is more-so a sci-fi action movie focused on the story of David, and it happens to feature aliens. The film ends with a huge cliffhanger, and we know that Ridley wants to do at least two more sequels that will fill the gap between Prometheus and Alien(1979). What did you guys think of the movie? Let me know if you see differently or disagree with anything I said! I'd love to hear what others think of the film. I've been waiting my whole life for a high-budget, Ridley Scott directed alien movie. For what it is, it is a great film, and I would give it a solid 7.5/10.

I got the impression that this was the combination of two half-assed movies - an Alien prequel and Prometheus 2. The beginning scene in the movie led me to believe we'd learn more about the engineers, and we didn't. It was the thing that I was most looking forward to, and I left with the impression that the next movie or two would be even less likely to touch upon that subject.

It was also a tad disappointing that the engineers on this planet looked as if they were destitute. I don't know if they were some sub-species of the engineers from the first movie or if the writers wanted to convey that the disparity of equity/wealth exists even in species more advanced than humans - regardless of the reasoning, I was also really disappointed by that.

Also annoyed by typical movie inconsistency garbage --- Bernard? seems to be able to fight David with ease and talks about upgrades since David's creation. One cut-scene (20 seconds) later and it was a completely even fight.

I really wanted Prometheus 2, and was probably a little too hopeful of receiving what I wanted given the title was 'Alien', not 'Prometheus'.

I think it did some things well and failed to execute on a few others --- I give it a 7/10

You make some great points that I definitely agree with. When I left for the first time I was really annoyed and you could even feel the vibe from everyone leaving the theatre that it wasn't really what we expected. I definitely was looking more forward to a Prometheus 2. However, When I saw that the title was changed from Covenant to Alien: Covenant, I had a feeling it wasn't going to focus on what we wanted. IMO there's so much wasted potential.. the engineer story could've been amazing and I would have loved to see more of that Deacon from the end of Prometheus. Oh well, we'll see what happens in awakenings; besides people waking up to face-huggers

Honestly I loved it. Might have preferred a somewhat slower darker more cerebral bent (a la Blade Runner) as opposed to the faster paced action slant the movie took stylistically, but otherwise was great. I loved the opening scene and all the references to Ozymandias

I spent like a solid hour after the movie researching all the explanations and theories on the internet, so I think I'm mostly up to speed on the mythology. I'm still curious if the Engineers are actually wiped out, or Paradise was just one of their multiple planets...
