Allow the government to ban (or limit) one thing, and they will quickly start to look for other ways to abuse their power...

As some of us mentioned in the NYC banning large soda thread, once you give the government power to ban one thing, they will quickly look for something else to ban.

That is exactly what Mayor Bloomberg and his panel are doing now. They already got what they wanted for large sodas, now its popcorn, milkshakes, and milk - coffee beverages.

I am telling you, just a matter of time before they ban extended periods of sitting at the office.

They better get on that sitting thing...

Oh, I could see calls for mandating that businesses require employees to get up out of their desks and walk around for a half hour before coming back. Or requiring businesses to buy the 'treadmill walk desk' for their employees. It is only a matter of time. But shhhh, its all in the name of protecting you...

Hahaha honestly there are times I would love to have a treadmill desk. Those look pretty sweet actually. But in a more serious answer, it is beyond ridiculous that they feel the need to ban large sodas. Seriously insane. Is obesity an issue? Yes. Is banning that stuff a good solution? No. They myswell send everyone a daily package and that's all your allowed to choose from. Like a government mandated MRE specifically for you.

It's time for a new Mayor. Aside from the gravity of the "issues" (laughing to self), what the hell???? Did bloomie wake up one morning all like "I GOTTA IDEAA!!!!!!! WE'SA GONNA BAN THE SODAAAAA!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOO"

Is he getting senile? NYC has much bigger problems. Also, if he wanted to promote health, then do that. Promote health. Starting a furor over soda size accomplishes nothing.

Exactly. Limiting soda size does nothing. Juice is almost as bad for you as soda, but the government pushes it. If you take a multivitamin, you don't need the vitamins in fruit juice. Better for a kid to drink a diet coke than a glass of apple juice. Neither are ideal, of course.

People need to be aware of what they are eating. I see girls coming from the gym order some Carmel Frappachino thing...I don't even think they realize they are basically chugging a milkshake.

Read labels. It is very hard to become obese if you are eating lean meats and vegetables. Hell, it would be a challenge to become obese on a diet of steak...a 8oz sirloin is ~400 calories.

I can point to a lot of "healthy food" as being terrible for a sedentary individual. A bowl of granola cereal can easily exceed 500 calories. Even something like a bagel and cream cheese can blow past 400.

I am actually not sure what the root cause is. People know the health risks associated with obesity. There is social pressure to stay in shape. Nutritional information is readily available. Some obesity is a given, but how is it an issue for 1/3 of the country?

I think it is because it is easy. It takes no effort whatsoever to simply buy ready made packaged food and eat it. Moreover, after a day at work and a bunch of kids to feed at home people will just buy something ready made or stop on the way home rather than taking the time to cook something. People don't think about what they put into their bodies. Vitamin water is a great example, the thing has a ton of sugar in it but people seem to think it is healthier than say gatorade. Or even better, people who chug gatorade not realizing that it has about the calories you burn while running an average speed mile.

People simply can't help themselves and when something tastes good they eat it. Eventually, you are so sedentary and used to eating crap that you don't want to got to the gym, then you feel embarassed about going and you rationalize your habits. You don't have time, you don't have the money, you don't care, why do people need to be skinny anyway, I'll just take a pill etc. For a lot of people It isn't easy staying in shape because our society has become sedentary. Jesus, we drive to work. Park on site. Get out of the car. Walk as little as possible to a desk where we sit some more. Maybe get bored at work so you snack a bit. Or get stressed and snack some more. It all adds up.

Idk I still like King Mike

This is direct from the mind of mayor bloomberg, "there are too many fat chicks working in my office. We need to correct this so I can get back to sexually haassing hot women in the office. I've noticed they drink a lot of soda. I know I'll ban that! That will get them skinny.... Fuck they are still fat. Ah ha it's cheese, we will now ban cheese... Fuck they are still fat, I've got it it's food. We shall ban all foods! Fuck they are still fat, I've figured it out. We will ban fat people. Fuck now there is no one left. Least I can jack off in private now..."

I will give anyone free reign over making any regulations they want, only one requirement. This person first must read every regulation on the books on the federal level. If they can achieve that I will let them make any rules they want. Hint, its not possible to do.
