Alumni network only for mentoring??

After contacting career services, I was told the alumni network is only for mentoring/guidance purposes and not to help students get a job/interview. If I didn't use it for only these purposes, my access would be taken away!!

What's up with that? Is this policy everywhere or just in my school? It's non target btw.

Yea, that's a bunch of bullshit (pardon my vulgarity). Alumni networks are not exclusively meant to "provide you with a job" but i think maybe they are trying to be politically correct. I am sure that just by getting guidance, this will help you land a interview since you could network and if they like you will help you get an interview. my 2cents

They say this so you do not send everyone in the alumni database a email of your resume and asking for a job. Email them asking them to be your mentor not for a job. Ask them for advice and how to get into the industry. Let them know what you would like to do and more often than not they will pass along your resume if they think you will be a good fit. Undergrads often do not know how to network and your careers services just wants to make sure that you reach out to people and build some type of relationship before asking them for a favor.

I agree with everyone above. Saying the alumni network is "for mentoring and advisory purposes only" is a great way to keep idiots from mass emailing everyone to say "I need an interview or a job, can you help me" and essentially spamming their inboxes. You need to know that every good recommendation comes from an advisory/mentoring/help/conversation background - then it can eventually become a "well I could pass your resume on for you," or "I've heard of an opening here, send me your resume and I'll see what I can do" type of thing. If not, then you've still got a good contact and some advice.

Bottom line is be smart, be tactful and be patient when it comes to networking.
