Am I Late to the Game? (Questions about SA22)

Hey everyone,

Currently a sophomore, targeting SA roles for 2022. I was wondering when people usually start their networking outreach at different banks? I've heard some say that it's smart to start a bit later (mid-Feb to early March) in order to keep connections warm and make sure people remember you. On the other hand, I know of others in my year that started over winter break, or even earlier. Would welcome all input on the best approach.

Moreover, what does the timeline look like for mastering technicals to the degree required for EB's? I have what I believe are all the necessary resources (M&I, Rosenbaum and Pearl, etc.), and was wondering how long/ to what depth people usually study these texts to be adequately prepared for the case studies and more nuanced questions an EVR or PWP might pull.

Apologies in advance if any of this comes off as uninformed/naive. Thanks!

Hey! This doesn’t come off an uninformed at all - don’t worry. You aren’t late to the game, but if you aren’t proactive you will be. For example, I am at a target and our recruiting starts in Feb/March for EB, and later in the summer for BB.

Regarding technicals, I’d say about 2 weeks minimum to a month to master it depending on your work ethic and extracurricular understanding. I can’t emphasize this enough: focus on behaviorals. Technicals are questions to check the box, behaviorals get you a job.

Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks for your response! To your point about recruiting opening in February/March for EB's, does this mean that just the online applications open up, or that these firms have begun first round interviews, and thus any networking should have already been finished? If it helps contextualize, I'm also at a target (Georgetown/Brown).
