Am I on the Right Track

Hi everyone,
I've been wanting to go into banking for a while now. I was wondering if I have a shot at an analyst position out of undergrad, or would it be more realistic for me to consider doing something else for a few years, getting my MBA and then going into banking.

Currently, I am a sophmore double majoring in electrical engineering and economics at Rice University. My GPA will probably be between a 3.3 and a 3.5. My extracurriculars include engineers without borders, intramural sports, officer in a few clubs, the finance committee for my residential college and a research position with a professor. I am looking into/interested in almost all banks, from BB to MM and small botiques.

Any thoughts on my chances would be greatly appreciated. Do I have a realistic shot at an analyst position out of undergrad... or am I just dreaming.

Thanks in advance!

If your school has a finance major change it to that

What are you talking about? You don't need a finance major to get into a BB. Coming from a non target doesn't change that.

from a non-target you need to have a quantative major...having a finance major is easier to explain why you want to do ibanking

I know ML had several summer interns this past summer from Rice (maybe 4-5) so I know its possible to get internships from there - most of them were not at the nyc office though.

BB's hire people from non targets, you just need to network, do your best to get as close to a 3.5 GPA, and it's very important to get an internship because most of a BB's hires come from that group. If you have a 3.5 now get an internship, if you get an offer and your gpa falls a little you'll be fine.

it probably would be difficult credit-wise to transfer... I had originally come to Rice because I thought, academically, it was comparable to the other schools (I was accepted to Cornell and Northwestern)... however now it seems that I was mistaken and those schools are much better feeders for Ibanking...

If you are confident that you can beat out the others in your class then you should stay put. I'm sure many Texas offices recruit Rice.
