Am I screwed/Need Help

So long story short, I'm a senior at a decent business school and am barely going to graduate with a 3.0 (I have a 2.85 right now. I did the calculation and if I get straight A's I'll be at 3.0, my grades are A's as of right now). I've been doing an internship with a bank for the past 8 months in corporate finance, and occasionally I'll do fixed income work for the CFO when he's buying new securities, etc. on top of still taking 15 credit hours per semester. So what I'm wondering is, what the hell should I do/how should I go about trying to land interviews for IBD/S&T/Asset Management? I've literally only landed one IBD interview, and it was for a muni group at a middle market in a shitty state(I'd rather die than work in public finance). I've put in over 400 apps over the past 3 months and haven't found shit. And it's really difficult for me to network as I'm stuck in the midwest. What should I be doing? Any help would be appreciated at this point because I'm not getting any luck right now.

You could try showing your major gpa on your resume as opposed to your overall. Not sure if that will do anything for you. If you've gone through as many apps as you say, I'm assuming you know the standard networking, cold calling, alumni network blah blah.

You've got decent experience. At the end of the day public finance isn't so bad. While I understand the disappointment of not hitting the target you were aiming for, if at worst you end up in public finance, then congratulations man. You can always get in other ways after the fact so don't beat yourself up if it doesn't happen. And good luck.

The closest largest city next to me is Chicago, and it's about a three hour drive away. And my problem is that my internship pretty much pays for my rent, and for my tuition so if I don't work I'm pretty much fucked so I commute and work Monday through Friday 40 hours a week as it is. So networking is hard as hell. And that public finance gig fell through because I thought the bank I work at was going to take me on to their muni group so I told the investment bank offering me a position in public finance no thanks which was a mistake. Long story short the MD of the group said he might take on an analyst (The group is brand new, we just started a DCM markets group) so my boss introduced me to him. After doing bitch work for the past month, I'm pretty much getting the vibe he's not taking any junior guys on so that's why I'm trying to figure out wtf to do. And it's not like I just have decent experience, I have been actively doing fixed income research at my bank as well (The VP and CFO use me and another analyst as a point of reference for what products to buy from institutional brokers, think SBA's, CLO's, CMBS's, and Muni's) and I do budget regularly. I just don't see why I'm not getting any calls back other than my GPA being low.

Have you tried sharing your resume on here and getting some feed back? Also, maybe consider moving down the totem pole and look at credit analyst positions at large commercial banks, corporate development, or treasury management positions. If you have experience in CMBS research, are there any shops in your area that you'd consider working for? I would think given your experience you'd be a good candidate for those positions.

I think your best bet is going to be positioning yourself to break in after an MBA. I empathize with your frustration, though. Keep pushing, but make sure you line up something for yourself after graduation as a safety net (even if it sucks).

Stuck in the Midwest? You need to start somewhere even if its in the Midwest. I get that you probably want to do IBD/S&T/Asset Management on one of the coasts (live the dream), but you need to be realistic about your situation right now. Given that you're probably graduating from a non-target with a not great GPA you should start networking in whatever large city is closest to you.

Yeah, it's not New York, but no one is going to be able to give you a silver bullet to fix your situation in the next six months. What you need is experience so when you apply/network/opportunities pop up in a year or two you'll be in a better position because you can point to your experience to prove you are capable.

If you want to end up on the coasts, it's still possible, but it may have to wait a year or two. Best of luck.
