Amazon's Virtual Assistant Alexa is Changing the Way we Live
Only a month or so ago my brother recommended to me that we should buy Amazon's personal assistant Alexa for our dad. I hadn't even heard of this product up to that point and when I researched it, I figured it was just another nifty tech item that would be nice to have. However, ever since interacting with the product and reading countless articles in the news about it, it seems to be more then just that.
I find it crazy that seemingly overnight voice technology in controlling all the functions in our house has jumped from science fiction to reality. While Alexa's capability is limited currently, it seems as though hooking up all appliance functions to a central hub is going to happen at a rapid pace. While there are many exciting technological products progressing these days, there is not one that seems to be developing at such a rate as Alexa.
If you are unfamiliar with the product and its capabilities here is an article for reference.
As Amazon’s technology becomes more advanced, it is also becoming more well-integrated into third-party systems. Not only is Alexa designed to be a personal assistant, but it can also operate as a hub for a smart home. This is a revolutionary new concept because until now smart home technology has been held back by the fact that there are very few comprehensive systems of control. Smart home technology has been modular; lights controlled by one app, security controlled by another, and heating and cooling controlled by yet another. Though some companies have sought to consolidate these systems, there hasn’t been a real contender for the throne — until now.
I bought one a couple months ago and I'm obsessed with it. I just like how she always does what I tell her to do, unlike my stupid girlfriend.
haha thanks this post made my day. What do you make her do mainly? I think I am going to buy one when I am back in the states.
play music, google things I don't know answers to, order shit on Amazon, the usual.
I heard you can tell her to get an Uber for you which sounds pretty nice. Saves you like the 5 seconds it takes to take out your phone and do it...
Alexa Take Over (Originally Posted: 01/06/2017)
At the CES tech conference this week, a multitude of companies unveiled their decision to adapt their products to include Amazon's new voice operating system, Alexa. Amazon has made their Alexa technology open for third party manipulation and this week's tech conference highlighted what this could mean for the future of home appliances.
For example, you may be able to order food through your refrigerator by simply asking it. Or you could change the television channel without using a remote. These examples highlight the trend towards a more seamless technological integration. However, there are several security concerns with voice technology. One of which is how much and how often a device is listening. With this in mind, what do you think the future of voice technology such as Alexa is? Would you want a home controlled primarily for voice prompts?
