America's priorities unwinding?

Dealbreaker recently posted an article saying that the median income of the top 200 CEOs in terms of market cap in the US is now $2.2M. I would guess that the median income of the top 200 athletes from football, boxing, soccer, basketball etc is substantially higher.

Ever wonder why the productive output of very often highly intelligent and creative individuals like c-level executives are said not be worth high compensation but a guy putting a ball in a basket is never given the same scrutiny?

Sign of the times fellas, America's priorities are truyly insane. Be smart and the masses will always get you.

I had this same conversation with a friend of mine earlier. Its just weird than no one would think that Michael Jordan shouldn't get $75 million a year in endorsements but that this is ludicrous money for a hedge fund manager.

You can tell someone that they aren't fast enough or that they are not strong enough but, the one thing you never do in America is tell someone that they aren't smart enough.

People seem to view executives as not as hardworking as a factory worker and having got their job by sheer nepotism. Its strange.

either you fellas don't watch a lot of espn or there is a bit of selective memory going on here. people constantly bitch about athlete salaries. for example, a-rod's contract was national news for an eternity. people even bitch about coaches salaries (jim calhoun anyone?)

your point about knee-jerk populism is a valid one ... but i'm not sure a sports comparison works here

But an average MLB player makes nearly two times what the average executive makes. Sure, people complained about ARod, but people aren't complaining about a guy like Raul Ibanez making $30 million. Ridiculous.

In fact, people not only don't complain about players making the money, they blame the teams if the players don't produce. Look at Barry Zito - the dude is making 126ml and is legitimately useless, yet people blame the Giant for signing him - which is fair. If someone offers me that much money, should I say no? It's their fault for being stupid. Imagine how angry the American people would be though if he were Dick Grasso (who didn't even have the decency to stink at his job and make the comparison plausible)

I agree in part spinner but nobody feels that a-rod's payment is tantamount to theft and no one is flat out threatening them like the RBS bankers for example are threatened.

I think the sports complaints are about whether the player is really worth that much etc etc in terms of his contribution to the team, the executive debates are a fundamental issue of whether somebody should even be legally allowed to get that pay. No one was calling for a-rod to be legally capped in terms of pay or looking at his pay as a multiplier of a ticket vendor etc.

I agree with emerging alpha that a basket going in is easy to understand and say "well im not tall enough, fast enough" but to say im too stupid, lazy, uncreative etc etc is something too fundamental for people to accept (really most everyone has to accept this at some level, i mean a lot of us are bright guys but not everyone is gonna run a $1B plus fund)

How can you compare entertainment with the business world? What is more important to people losing their disposable or non-disposable income?

When Zito eff's up, you lost the $80 to see him play. When a CEO eff's up its people's pensions and lives on the line.

You sound like an angry nerd, why does the QB get all the girls?

Athletes have very little responsibility to society. A CEO on the other hand has a ton, in the past various executives and bankers have not taken this responsibility seriously and it has affected many people's lives. The masses are going to get angry after a while.
