Analyst Bloomberg usage
Hi guys,
So I recently got access to a bloomberg terminal at my school. I was wondering what IB analysts usually use it for? and how can I get more familiar with it?
Or do IB analysts usually refer to Capital IQ in terms of corporate information?
Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Don't use it too much, just to sometimes check debt and beta figures
IBD doesn't really use bloomberg all that much - most financials are gleaned from 10k's/10q's/capIQ/factset
So if I were to play with it and put it on my resume. What should I be familiar with? (For IB)
Thanks!
Just put it under competencies or technical skills or something. You shouldn't go into it at all and I highly doubt, outside of some trading jobs, that anyone will ask you about it in an interview. Just my experience though.
Just learn the basics of the interface
Help Help is the only thing you need for IB.
Haha, yeah, help help is clutch.
Learn the system and get familiar with it. It will help your school work and there is a wealth of information on the system. It is one of those things that wont make you, but it is so easy you should have it.
If you end up in Lev Fin, you are going to use it a lot:
"Ticker Corp" [press enter] [Click on the exact name escapes me know but something like "Corporate Notes"] [Click on one of the notes] "Des" [press enter]
Mess around with everything on that screen.
sorry, but what is help help???
help help is you pressing help twice. then you'll be connected with the people at bloomberg who will help you with your requests.
as for firebi234. i think the hotkey is RELS
what is firebi324 referring to as "Corporate Notes" ?
BMAP is epic.
Yeah sorry guys, I was a little brain dead last night. What I meant to say was corporates by company which is essentially any debt outstanding. If you actually do the first command I listed it brings you directly to the notes. And if you click on one of the notes it brings you to the screen I was referencing (as noted above RELS command).
so it shows you debt outstanding by company?
Also, I noticed that there is now a picture on this post. I wonder who took the time to put it on there. lol.
What it shows is a relatively updated info on any debentures or convertible debt notes your company's got outstanding. Sometimes many companies don't put much info regarding their converts into their Qs - only Ks - or don't let investors know if any terms of the convert (i.e. conversion price) have been changed. Now, Bloomberg mostly gets its info from the same source YOU get your info (filings, PRs, etc.), it can still offer a clean and updated view on any repayments or term changes or issuances of various corporate bonds.
Other things people use Bloomberg for are estimates. I consider it to be the best and most comprehensive database of analyst recommendations. (Equity - Ticker - ANR). Some people use their consensus numbers for estimates, too, (Equity - Ticker - EEB), but I think FactSet has become much better and more transparent at it in the past few years, so most people use FactSet / FirstCall - but Bloom is still a good source to check against.
Thanks guys!
