Anatomy of a front office

Hey guys. I wanted to ask you something that may seem obvious to many, but it's a bit puzzling for me. Can someone explain to me the different roles at a HF, Pension Fund, etc in large markets (US, Europe)?

In order not to seem like stupid, let me give you guys some background. I am currently a Portfolio Manager at an insurance company (it's actually a mix of an insurance company and a pension fund -we manage the portfolios for both companies) in a third world latin american country. Our structure is quite small so it is more likely than not to be very different to what you guys are used to. We have a CIO (who, to be honest, is not really involved in most of the investment decisions...), and then three PMs (a head PM -to call it some way- and two semi senior PMs -one of them, me). And that's it (well, we also have 4 guys from BO). We don't have any analyst team to help us (we do all of our analysis and modeling), or anything like that.

I am currently applying to B-School and I wanted to make the roles in my company comparable to what is normal in the US and Europe. Can you give me some idea on how roles are distributed in "the real world", please?

Thanks!

BTW, if anyone is interested in knowing anything else about how is to work on this side of the planet, glad to answer!
