Career Resources
just curious, John Mack, are you really an MD in IB? And do you work at MS?
and I am not really John Mack either. No longer in a bulge bracket but my experience and ability would merit MD-status if I were.
If you read any of my other posts, you will see that my area of expertise is equity research and Asset Management, although I know enough about IB to write about it knowledgeably.
John Mack,
First, thanks for taking the time to do this. As someone interested in breaking into ER I am sure I can learn much from your experiences. And to save you the trouble of having to repeat answers you may have in the past I will do my best to search through old topics.
To start with, how do you see candidates positioning themselves differently for an entry level position in ER now vs. when you entered the field?
Are you seeing more prepared candidates (IE taking WSP, training courses, CFA, etc.)?
Thanks for the insight.

No idea - I've not interviewed anyone for entry-level positions for three years. As with all job applications, the better you are able to do the job the more likely you are to get it.
Thanks for doing this.
John, I'm going to save you and me a lot of time by cutting through the BS; basically, I'll be direct and to the point: Can you help me find a job?
Hehe, jk (or not, depends on you :P). Anyways, what do you do now? ER MD turned philanthropist? photography? travel? still working? chasing tail?
Also, what do you think 2009 recruitment will feel like? Can it get worse then it is?
Best, Mez
"Can you help me find a job?" No
"Anyways, what do you do now?" buy and sell shares for fun and profit
"Also, what do you think 2009 recruitment will feel like?" I've heard that gen Y needs to be coddled so I'm going to sugarcoat it for you: It's going to sssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. Worst time to enter the job market in decades.
"Can it get worse then it is?" As Karen Carpenter sang, "we've only just begun..."
I appreciate you putting this group together Mack the Knife. What are your thoughts on Goldman Sach's stock going down almost 7 bucks today, when the rest of the brokers were decidedly positive on the day. Is bad news coming from them shortly?
no particular thoughts on the price action. The market has been extremely jumpy for the last couple of months with shares moving large on even unlikely rumours.
Having said that, bad news IS coming from them shortly. Not that that is particularly controversial - bad news is coming from EVERYONE shortly.
