Duff & Phelps, shame on you.
I actually really respect this student. I'm only a junior going through recruiting right now, but if I was a banker, I would interview him.
Why? At the end of the day he's still doing what all the other applicants are doing - groveling for a job.
Ha, no ones reads those, right? Right, guys?
This isn't a standard cover letter, this guy actually emailed it directly to someone he met. Of course he read it.
From the email chain, it looks like they actually gave the kid a phone interview.
Assuming I had actually met him, I'd at least give him a call. Also love that he spelled "crap" with an extra 'p' so as to not get anyone flagged by their HR department!
Love the shining shoes and doing laundry bit. Get this kid a job.
I do want to emphasize that the real reason this letter works is because he actually networked beforehand in a meaningful way. If this had been a cold email, it'd be humorous but far less effective. Having actually met and interacted with the person he emailed in a reasonably meaningful way goes a LONG way towards helping him out.
