Best Response

Your contact has to figure this one out because it totally depends on who they are and where they fit and how much they want to do for you. Not every MD (or D, VP, etc) is created equal at any firm. One person could send an email to HR with one sentence saying look at this person and they'll jump through hoops to get you in the door (you still have to get the job if course) because that person has lots of pull. Same title person may have to do a lot more to have the same effect. I've never worked at GS but I've done stuff in the past with them and referred people to them (so they've generated fees from me in the past and will in the future). I'm friendly with the co-head of one of their best groups and I bring everything through him even if I know a more direct person because I know if I want to ask a favor such as getting an LP's son or nephew run up the flag pole he can do it in a second.

Thanks very much, I completely understand your point.

S/he is quite influential, but has never done this before for someone. So it sounds like how this is typically done is by just sending an e-mail to HR or recruiters they know? Then it comes down to their pedigree in the firm and what they say about you in their e-mail?

I just wanted to make sure that was really the only tactic used and there wasn't something else often done (an online code, etc.).

Thanks again.
