Any advice for a sophomore?
Like the title says, I'm a sophomore and I currently attend TCU. Just recently I've found a strong interest in IB and really look to develop a career in IB. I'm a little worried with my current GPA being a 3.3, but after this semester it should come up quite a bit. I understand that not only am I late in the IB process, but also for an internship for this coming summer. Any advice for me? Is an internship this summer possible with being this late in the process?
Congrats on developing an interest while you're in college. Better now than when you're out.
It likely won't be possible at a big firm to land a summer analyst role. Most deadlines have passed. You really need to start looking in August 1 year before you wanna start the internship.
With that said, you're still young. Get your GPA up as high as possible. 3.3 is low. See if you can get something at a smaller firm for the summer for some pocket money. Also, talk to your career services to determine whether i-banks do actually recruit out of the school. They will know what companies come to your career fairs.
Its 100% not too late. Idk what ^ is talking about. Start networking ASAP with alumni and anyone you have a connection with at banks. Learn as much as you can about what IBD is online. Start prepping for interviews. Buy the BIWS interview guide. Get your resume reviewed by your school/counselors. The 3.3 is most likely set in stone. Official GPA cut off is 3.2 for some banks, but they're looking for 3.5+ so you will have to network extra hard, and have a legit non self harming reason for the low GPA. A lot of banks applications have opened not too long ago, some still have yet to open. Hit the ground running bud. Good luck.
Thank you for the advice! When you talk about the bank applications that haven't opened yet, would this be for next summer or this coming summer? Any suggestions on where to start? Also, what resources would you use to study up on IB (excluding WSO)?
I was talking about summer of 2019. If you still haven't found something for summer of 2018, I would suggest trying to leverage any kind of relationship you have to find something finance related. Im sure there are some TCU alum in PWM. Try and find something like that for this summer. Show your interest in financial services. But its very important that you land something for this summer. Start networking with alumni at the different banks for summer of '19. Use linkedIn, Career services, etc. Use the Breaking into Wall St Interview guide, WSO also has a good IB interview prep book. They are pricey, but can help a ton. As for learning about IB, just use google. tons of resources online. Investopidea, Mergers and Inquisitions have tons of good articles that explain the basics of IB, what it is, difference between product groups and coverage groups etc. But if you say you are interested in IB you should have a strong understanding of what it is and how its different from other functions within finance.
It's a bit late at this stage, but you can do some heavy networking with boutiques/small PE shops/VC firms etc in your area to hopefully land something for the summer. As for junior SA recruiting, most banks have already opened applications, so hurry up.
With no previous internship experience, is it possible for me to land an IB internship? If so, are there specific banks that have been known to take on interns with no experience? Thank you for the reply
