Any advice for EB banking analyst, asked to lateral to M&A, no 3rd year offer during covid?

I went to a non-target outside the US, summered in PE/ hedge funds outside the US in really good teams with great mentors who saw me as that sharp kid, and moved to NY full time for EB banking, thinking elite advisory would be a fun challenge. A year into the job, I was staffed on the highest profile deals and was being pulled into rogue staffings, but my mental health was in decline from a lack of social capital (ie. they made me build out everything for the deal and when it launched they put another analyst on, I sent in my hours and they didn't track). The microaggressions were accumulating and I started feeling undeserving about myself and this impacted my relationships, resulting in a breakup. I asked to move to M&A before end of first year and was told there are coverage spots in satellite offices. First year reviews were balanced followed by 160k comp, but I was told if I wanted to move to M&A I had to be the best analyst they have ever seen... I tried networking internally and an M&A staffer tried through HR BlackBox, which didn't work and only got me more psychologically beaten up by my staffer. I started recruiting externally despite being burnt out. Deals started slowing down starting December in my 2nd year, juniors (analysts and associates) who pulled their weight were unexpectedly leaving, and when covid hit the US I was told there is no spot for me in M&A and I'm not interested in the work in this team so they are not extending a 3rd year. The record is that I voluntarily left. This is fine cuz I was making more from my portfolio than from banking and this freed up my time to practice cases. Not pushing back also allowed relationships with MDs to get me a few interviews and associates said they were willing to vouch for me.

Interviews during covid have been tough because
1) few shops are hiring
2) processes aren't closing, start dates are getting pushed back, so you don't know if you're being ghosted
3) competition from M&A bankers

I know I have to toughen up and feel optimistic about my future. When asked why no 3rd year or associate promote, what would be the best response, in light of office politics and covid? Any advice on generating public equity interviews? Any thoughts would be helpful!
