Any Boomerang Employees out there? Was it worth it?

I left a firm because there were very few advancement opportunities. Well, one of the senior guys left and now the company has approached me to come back and fill that slot. I'm not super happy with my new firm but I've only been here for a year and a half.

I'd feel very awkward going back (both internally and communicating externally to the market), but it seems to be the best path for me. Has anyone done this, any advice or considerations to take into account?

When they reach out to you.... this is a good sign and could be a great move. They know you, and they want you back, thus you are in a great spot from a negotiating standpoint. So, yeah, totally consider it (it is actually more common than you may realize).

The key is that they contacted you, not the other way around (like do you want to be the one being texted by your ex, or to be texting your ex?)

Even if the offer is worth it, would you be concerned about how this looks to brokers, lenders, etc....or am i completely overthinking it?

Yeah totally overthinking it. But, I would def make getting a higher grade title (if all appropriate), so it is clear you went back for promotion. This is not a big deal if hard to materialize. But literally, brokers and lenders are reviewing your resume when doing business with you, they won't give a shit. You are only one with any hangups on this tbh.
