Yup.

I was supposed to graduate this may and had a ft offer at a BB(IT dept) waiting for me upon graduation. I wasn't able to secure a FT ib interview, but numerous IT interviews were thrown at me and I got offers from most of them.

Problem was I didn't want to kick off my career in IT. So I decided to change the date of graduation on my resume to Dec. 07 and started looking for summer internships in IB/S&T.

I was able to secure an S&T internship at a BB this summer and will be doing just that. I have turned down the IT FT offer I previously accepted and picked up a minor. The reason I gave was that I was unable to graduate this May.

Before any bastard out there judges me for messing with another persons job opportunity, my reason for accepting the IT offer at the time was to hedge the risk of not getting an internship. I had to do what was best for me.

Hopefully, this all works out.

Interesting. I hear that it doesn't matter what your graduation date is though. Banks will recruit you for a summer internship and inform you that you will not start until the following year.

But what you are saying is that you changed your graduation date because you're going to stay in school for another year. I wonder if anyone has taken a summer internship and just sat back until they started full time the next year (if they received a FT).

Hope it all works out for you.

From what I understand seniors just aren't eligible for summer internships. I've heard that the only way to do it would be do what naija did and postpone your graduation date...otherwise I think you just have to wait until the fall and apply for FT.

Well, from my research and conversations with HR, they typically do not recruit graduates as summer interns. I asked quite a few banks this question before I decided to take the steps i took.

Maybe it is possible at a boutique but I am pretty sure that BBs/near BBs don't hire graduates as interns.

Also, I wouldn't be in school for an additional yr. I have fulfilled all the requirements for my major and first minor. I just declared another minor so that I had a reason to return. I do not plan to complete it and would be taking only 1 or 2 classes next semester.

To me, that's more like sitting back and relaxing until I resume full time next yr(hopefully). But i'll probably use the time more wisely and start working on my GMAT, and some NASD exams if the firm permits.

As for myself, I didn’t realize what I wanted to do until my last year of college (senior). During the fall semester of my senior yr, I applied for IB analyst jobs. I received several interviews, as well as many final rounds, but was unable to obtain an offer, mostly due to the fact that I did not have much tech finance exposure. Even though I knew a lot about industries and their business models (tech, biotech, real estate, and etc), probably more than many of the 1st yr analysts and interns, I had limited finance knowledge due to a lack of internship experience.

I tried to apply for an internship the following spring by trying to extend my graduation date to the next semester, so that I would be eligible. Unfortunately, the career center at my school are full of pricks and suspended me from their OCR, saying that this was unethical and violated their policies. Ironically, HR for many of the companies I talked to said that they did not mind, and if anything, they respected the determination and effort with which I was going about to try to get a "foot in the door". Luckily, despite being suspend from my campus OCR, which makes it very hard to look for an entry level job or internship, I was still able to talk my way into an internship in my senior yr, and get a full time job offer.

So, as long as you have the proper skills (intelligence, determination, and etc), it is still possible to get internship in your senior yr. You just have to be able to explain why you want the opportunity.

So did you return to school after the internship or you pretty much chilled for a yr and resumed with the next incoming class?
