Any Other Sites Like WSO?
Hey guys,
I was wondering if there are other forums like WSO floating around out there that are of the same caliber as this one (in terms of both content and organization). I've seen some other forums like BankersBall, DealBook (the forums don't seem to exist anymore), etc., but they're all pretty sub-par compared to this one. Just trying to get a better grasp of the financial services community, and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge regarding this topic. Thanks!
Check out vault.com. I have not used the site in a long time, but it was very helpful when I went through recruiting
from BankersBall and Dealbook have converted to dedicated WSO users in the past 12 months.

Hey Starting Monkey - just wanted to say that if there are any suggestions you have that you think would make WSO better please let us know.
We have been working on generating useful guides at a really good price to help prospectives get into the industry, but if there is stuff that annoys you and/or you would change we'd love to hear it in the suggestions forum here:

we still have a fairly decent signal to noise ratio and we will never be able to eliminate all "what are my chances?" threads, but we continually trying to get more Certified Users and valuable members to post helpful advice. Also, any suggestions on how to help promote the site would also be helpful.
In 2008 the site had over 500,000 unique visitors and 11 million impressions which is a decent size but we think there is still room to grow (and traffic has been way up over the past 60 days due to recruiting season) and improve the community.

I'm quite fond of the old Vault before they destroyed the community. It still baffles me why they charge users money to read old threads.
Please don't make the same mistakes WSO.
Never...I think there is a lot of valuable information in the WSO archives and I have started working with some of the users to help me organize / compile it and add our own advice so that we can package it in such a way that makes it easy and quick to digest.
We will always allow users to go do their own search, but I think there is also value to compiling the best advice in the archives into "mini-guides" that we can charge a small fee for (like $5-9). for example, a Guide on how to be a good summer analyst or a guide on how to transition into PE, etc. I think people would be willing to pay a small fee to have all of the best advice delivered to them in an organized and targeted fashion.
It is a ton of work to write these guides but I think that is a much better option $ wise (non-intrusive, optional packaging for the users that want it) -- charging for the forums would basically kill WSO (or almost any online community)...

Definitely - maybe if you somehow made it so we could browse through the tags as well as search - I know the threads are organized by sector, but if say I wanted to find discussions MM PE funds in CA I could go PE Funds - MM - By Region. Not sure how much value that would add as it is fairly easy to find that with the search function, but it's the best I've got.
Yes, I would definitely pay for some if not all of those guides; I think the price-point you're at now is pretty fair.
No lie, Vault's forums are horrible now and not very well organized even for those of us with Gold memberships. The only good content they have are their guides, which I doubt I would pay for if my school didn't provide them for free.
I would pay $5 to have all the posts regarding, for example, breaking into PE organized into an easy-to-read / easy-to-navigate format. Good idea Patrick.
I would pay 5-9 bucks for the organized info about summer internship performance.

Two quant-focused forums are wilmott and nuclearphynance.

Wilmott seems to have a lot more activity. I sometimes have connection/speed issues with Wilmott.
Because of the quant focus, these two would be most relevant to trading and research.

They have a section with a lot of posts on ER careers. As far the actual finance, it would mainly be CFA related obviously. Nucleaphynance or Wilmot are trading/quant oriented, but there might be ER-oriented threads there as well.

So I'm a newbie to this forum, and I've found WSO to be one of the best resources out there - I've spent the past 5 days solid reading all of the posts here. Easily the best forum for IB out there. But I want to keep learning as much as I can, so the buck can't just stop here. I've found a few great free resources, notably Mergers and Inquisitions (but found them a bit too 'salesy'), Management Consulted - though for MCs I still found the learnings transferrable, and Inside Investment Banking's free tutorials helpful also.
But the problem is, I've exhausted all of these learnings, and I still feel like I'm not 'there' yet, not fully equipped and ready for notably resumes and interviews and I don't want to spend the money on paid resources yet (unless I get 'real' desperate), so what other free resources do you recommend, and where can you point me into this forum??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
