What kind of position is "relationship manager"? BB Asset Management
I got contacted for an interview at a good firm that I wouldn't mind going to but got a bit disappointed that the position they described is a "relationship manager".
I am trying to break into investment management with the eventual goal of becoming a portfolio manager. This positions seems nothing related to being part of the investment team where I conduct investment analysis/trading.
Any thoughts?
Underrated position.
can you explain why?
if I'm interested in a PM path, would it help me at all?
Institutional Sales take the first crack at winning clients, and then the relationship managers take it from there once they're sold on your fund/managed account; it's going to be a lot of answering queries, and eventually scheduled updates on how everything is going, etc. Think of what Peter Campbell does in Mad Men and you pretty much have it.
At my place they sit right next to us and ask us when they don't understand wtf we're doing; at the higher levels there is crossover between them and PMs and some do both
"Relationship Management" can mean very different things. For instance, at BlackRock, what most people think of as "relationship management," winning clients, schmoozing them, explaining the investment strategy falls under the Global Client Group. If someone at BlackRock tells you that their position is "Relationship Manager," it actually means they are basically the liason between back office at BlackRock and back office at JP Morgan/BNY Mellon/etc. In the first position, there is some hope of moving over to the PM side in that you will have to interact with the PMs and Analysts, but not necessarily building the skills. In the second position, you will basically be stuck in BO.
If there is an online job posting, you should be able to figure this out pretty quickly. If not, you will have to ask for some clarification in the interview.
Any relationship managers here? What does your day look like? (Originally Posted: 10/18/2016)
I have an interview coming up with a bank that has product specialists in larger cities and needs a relationship manager to maintain client relationships locally. But does anyone know in detail what this job entails in practice? The internet is almost empty when it comes to this topic.
