Any special knowledge needed for Securities Based Lending?

Is there a team that deals with assessing the collateral or some sort of system for categorizing the collateral based on the type of security, volatility, or trade volume?

I'm trying to figure out if this is something that someone from a normal lending background can pick up. One of the analysts used to do IB, so I don't know if its one of those jobs that one can transition into without such a background. Based of this person's profile I did see that some portfolio research using Bloomberg is part of the job.

Not to be confused with securities lending.
